The predecessor of Wuhan University was the Self-improvement School founded by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty in 1893. 1902 was renamed Dialect School. After the Revolution of 1911, the Beiyang government established the National Wuchang Normal School on 19 13 on the basis of dialect schools. 1923 was renamed as National Wuchang Teachers College, and 1925 was renamed as National Wuchang University. 1926, the Wuhan National Government merged Wuchang University with several other schools to form the National Wuchang Sun Yat-sen University. 1928 In July, the National Government reorganized Sun Yat-sen University in Wuchang and established National Wuhan University. 1932 In the spring, all the teachers and students moved into the new school building in Luojiashan.
