This Cui Yingying is nineteen years old, knitting women's red, poetry, calligraphy and arithmetic, everything. When her father was still alive, he had already betrothed her to Zheng Heng, the eldest son of Zheng Shangshu, Zheng's nephew.

The scholar Zhang Sheng happened to meet the young lady and Hongniang, who had gone outside the temple to play. Zhang Sheng was originally from Xiluo, the son of the Minister of Rites, and his parents were both dead and his family was poor. He went to the capital alone to catch the examination, passing through this place, suddenly remembered that his eight friends Du indeed in Puguan, so stayed. Listened to the scholar store in the second brother said, here there is a Pujiao Temple, is the Empress Zetian incense courtyard, the scenery is very beautiful, the three religions and nine streams, those who pass by all look forward to.

This is to appreciate the beauty of the temple Zhang Sheng, inadvertently saw the handsome Cui Yingying, exclaimed: "Ten years do not know the face of the king, I believe that Cain Juan solution to the wrong person." In order to be able to see a few more faces, he borrowed a room with the abbot of the temple, and he stayed in the west wing.

One day, Mrs. Cui made a dojo for her late husband, which Mrs. Cui ruled very strictly, and there was not a single man in or out of the dojo, so Zhang Sheng slipped in. At this time, the fasting for the dojo are ready, the lady and the Miss incense, in order to repay the father's upbringing of the grace. Zhang Sheng thought: "Miss is a woman, still have to repay the parents of the heart; I drifted for several years, since the parents of the next world, and has not been a strand of paper money to repay."

Zhang Sheng knew from the monk that Miss Yingying went to the garden every night to burn incense. When it was late at night, the moon was clear and the monks were all asleep, Zhang Sheng came into the back garden and peeped at the lady burning incense. He then recited a poem: "The moonlight dissolves at night, the flowers are silent in spring; how can I face the white spirit and not see the man in the moon?" Yingying also chimed in with a poem, "The Orchid Room has been lonely for a long time, and there is nothing to do in the spring; I expect that those who chant should have pity on those who sigh long and hard." Zhang Sheng's nightly reading touched the young lady Cui Yingying, and she fell in love with him.

Sun Feihu, a rebel general, heard that Cui Yingying had a "beautiful face, a beautiful face". Then led five thousand people, will be surrounded by layers of Pujia Temple, limited to the old lady within three days to hand over Yingying do his "pressure on the lady", we can not do anything about it. This Cui Yingying is a strong woman, she would rather die, but also do not want to be robbed by the thieves. In the midst of the crisis, the lady said: "No matter what kind of person, as long as you can kill off the thieves, sweep away the evil atmosphere, the young lady will be betrothed to him." Zhang Sheng's friend Du Zhen, who was a martial arts scholar, was the marshal of the western expedition, leading an army of 100,000 men to defend the Pu Pass. Zhang Sheng first stabilized Sun Feihu with a delaying tactic, and then wrote a letter to Du Zhen, asking him to send troops to repel Sun Feihu. Monk Huiming went down the mountain to deliver the letter, and three days later, Du Zhen's rescuers arrived and repelled Sun Feihu.

Old Lady Cui made Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying marry as brother and sister at the reward banquet on the ground that Yingying had been promised to Zheng Heng, and gave Zhang Sheng a generous gift of gold and silk to make Zhang Sheng choose another good match, which made both Zhang Sheng and Yingying suffer. Seeing this, the maid Hongniang arranges for them to meet. At night, Zhang Sheng plays the qin and confesses his love for Yingying, and Yingying pours out her love for Zhang Sheng.

Since that day, after listening to the qin, not seeing Yingying for many days, Zhang Sheng suffered from lovesickness, and took the opportunity of Hongniang's visit to the sick to ask her to send a letter to Yingying, who replied by asking Zhang Sheng to meet him under the moon. At night, Miss Yingying was playing the piano in the back garden. Zhang Sheng heard the sound of the piano and climbed up the wall to take a look.

Wanting to meet with the lady, he climbed over the wall and entered. Yingying saw him climb over the wall and entered and blamed him for her behavior, swearing that she would never see him again, which caused Zhang Sheng's condition to become more and more serious. The story goes that Yingying went to Zhangsheng's room to have a meeting with him under the pretext of visiting him.

The old lady saw that Yingying was in a trance these days, her speech was unclear, and her behavior was strange, so she suspected that she had transgressed with Zhangsheng. So she called in Hongniang and forced to ask, Hongniang had no choice but to tell the truth. Hongniang pleaded with the old lady on behalf of the young lady and Zhangsheng, and said that it was not the fault of Zhangsheng, the young lady and Hongniang, but the old lady's fault, the old lady should not be blind to her words, and let Zhangsheng and the young lady brother and sister.

The old madam had no choice but to tell Zhang Sheng that if he wanted to marry Miss Yingying, he would have to go to the capital to take the examination and get a title. Miss Yingying set up a banquet at the Ten Mile Pavilion to see Zhang Sheng off, and she repeatedly urged Zhang Sheng not to "stop his wife and marry again," not to "spring fish and geese without news. After seeing off Zhang Sheng at the Changting Pavilion, Zhang Sheng traveled to the Caoqiao store and met Yingying in his dream, but he woke up in despair.

Zhang Sheng won the first prize in the examination and wrote a letter to Yingying to report his happiness. At this time, Zheng Heng once again came to Pu Save Temple and fabricated a lie that Zhang Sheng had been recruited by Wei Shangshu as a good son-in-law in the east bed. Mrs. Cui once again promised the young lady to Zheng Heng and decided to choose an auspicious day for the wedding. It so happened that on the wedding day, Zhang Sheng returned as the governor of Hezhong, and Marshal Du Zhen came to congratulate him. When the truth comes out, Zheng Heng is so ashamed that he kills himself with hatred, and Zhang Sheng and Yingying finally get married.
