Introduction of Guangzhou Wedding Customs
The Three Books and Six Rites is the basic of traditional Chinese marriage customs, which has been set as early as in the pre-Qin Dynasty. The so-called "Three Books" are the instruments (including the book of appointment, the book of rites and the book of welcome) that should be available for practicing the "Six Rites", which are the written records that guarantee the validity of the marriage in ancient times. The Six Rites are the six formalities that must be completed in order to marry a wife. Each marriage must complete these six steps before it is officially recognized. Marriage customs in Guangzhou have inherited the traditional Chinese marriage customs of the Three Books and Six Rites, while at the same time having local characteristics. With the progress of the times, the customs that have been preserved mainly include: passing the rites, returning the rites, carrying the dowry, settling the bed, getting on the head, making the bed, welcoming the bride, passing the fire bowl, honoring the tea, stepping on the bed, pressing the bed, and so on.
