The origin of Pangu

Pangu's name and image may come from many sources. Some scholars believe that Pangu borrowed the myths of southern minorities, such as Miao, Zhuang and Yao. They have a creator named Pan Hu or Pangu, a dog or a dragon, who married a princess and gave birth to a nation. Pan Hu or Pangu can also be interpreted as gourd, which means the reproduction of life.

Some scholars believe that Pangu was introduced from Indian mythology, and its prototype was Brahma or Brusa. Brahma is the spirit of creation. It was bred in a huge eggshell for a long time, and then it broke the eggshell and divided itself into two halves. One half became the sky and the other half became the earth. Brusa is a primitive giant. After being dismembered and sacrificed, all parts of his body became the world and everything.

Anyway, the legend of Pangu has been circulating in China for a long time, and it was first written by Xu Zheng of the State of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280). Later, in different historical periods such as Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Tang and Song Dynasties, there were records and legends about Pangu.

Pangu created the world.

The story goes something like this: in ancient times, heaven and earth were indistinguishable, and the whole universe was like a big egg. It's a mess, it's dark, and you can't tell up and down, left and right, southeast and northwest. But there is a great hero in the egg, and this is Pangu, who started the world.

Pangu was conceived in an egg for 18 thousand years and finally woke up from a deep sleep. He found himself wrapped in a dark and suffocating space and felt very uncomfortable. He propped himself up and broke the eggshell. Eggshell fragments scattered all over the floor, the light and clear part rose into the sky, and the heavy and turbid part sank into the ground.

Pangu stood between heaven and earth, afraid that heaven and earth would close again. Therefore, he is trying to open up the world every day and let it expand continuously. His body is constantly growing, and every day it is ten feet taller and ten feet wider than the day before. In this way, he persisted for 18,000 years until his height reached nine Wan Li, and heaven and earth opened nine Wan Li.

Pangu was finally satisfied. He felt that he had fulfilled his mission. He lay down to rest, but never woke up. He died, but all his body parts became everything in the world.
