Lake opera has a strong flavor of Jiangnan water town. It is sung in Huzhou dialect, which is the local Wu dialect. Not only the language is kind and soft, the tune is fresh and smooth, and the performance is elegant and delicate, which is suitable for family love scenes with joys and sorrows.
The performance of Lake Opera is mainly literary drama, which has the characteristics of simplicity, softness and strong life atmosphere. In the early days, there were only three plays in the role of Huzhou Tanquan: Xiao Sheng, Xiao Dan and the clown.

Huzhou Tanquan is a kind of folk rap art that gradually rose from 1820 to 196 1 in Huzhou. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, people in the field of lake drama have created a number of outstanding plays, such as costume drama "Kirin Belt", new historical drama "Song of the Great Wall" and modern drama "Honglang Lake". These plays were performed by Huzhou Lake Troupe, which satisfied and enriched people's cultural life.
After entering the 1980s, Huzhou Lake Theatre Company has successively created and performed modern plays such as Taiping Bridge and Wedding Candle Change, which have a certain influence in China.
