Art history is an ancient and new occupation for China people. It is ancient because as early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, China people have been systematically studying ancient works of art, and have made incomparable achievements in other civilizations at that time. However, it is also a subject that modern ordinary people are not familiar with, because as a subject, its premise, theory and discussion methods are very different from those of traditional users, and the root of this difference is related to the influence of western art history research on China scholars. Because the study of art history has such a character in China, scholars who have been engaged in this kind of research since the early years of the Republic of China have more or less felt the pressure from both tradition and the west. Readers can clearly feel the reaction to these two pressures in the works of art history published before the Anti-Japanese War, such as Gu Jiegang's Painting History of Tang and Song Dynasties. The research on the art history of the Taiwan Province Strait in the past forty years is basically a continuation of this situation, but it has further developed in depth and breadth. Judging from the evolution of China's modern culture, the study of China's art history is confronted with the two-way challenge of China tradition and modern west, which can really be said to be the epitome of the overall cultural phenomenon in this period.
