Why don't the Chinese have characters and numbers now? They had them in ancient times~
The titles of the ancient Chinese were very complicated and difficult to remember, comparable to Russian novels. They not only had surnames, family names, first names and characters, but also elegant names, posthumous names, bestowed names, gags, room names and so on.
Now, "word and number" is basically out of the Chinese title system, only a very small number of people still take the name out of hobby, such as the writer Li Ao, the word Ao Zhi; wooden heart of the original name of Sun Pu, the word Yangzhong, the number of pastoral care; calligrapher Fan Zeng, the word ten wings, the number of hold Chong Zhai master; traveler Zhong Wenfang, the word Kui, the number of one line of the Jushi, but not commonly used, and has no practical use. and have no practical use.
The taboo on names in Chinese tradition is the basis for the creation of characters. In no other civilization is there such a wide range of taboos around the name as in China. When meeting someone, calling them by their first name is a very serious insult, and in formal writing, one has to avoid the taboo of the honored one, of the elders, and of Confucius, etc. The most famous example is the Shiji (史记), which is a book about the history of China. The most famous example is the Historical Records, in which Sima Qian changed the names of all the people with the same name in the Historical Records to avoid the taboo of his father's name (Sima Tan), such as Zhang Mengtan, to Zhang Mengtong.
The tradition of these characters and numbers has also disappeared so far, becoming a niche hobby. The gradual disappearance of characters and numbers came with the collapse of the Manchu imperial system after the 1911 Revolution, the abolition of the imperial examinations, and the interruption of the path of learning to be a scholar, which transformed the scholar into a modern new intellectual who lost his traditional political aristocratic status. Under this great change, the traditional system of characters and numbers also lost its practical application basis and became cultural symbols.
