Is it customary to have recourse to the public?
Appealing to the masses is the practice of making others accept one's point of view because most people already agree with it, or using the fact that no one agrees with one's point of view as a reason for opposing it.
There are two other names for this fallacy: the bandwagon fallacy and the consensus gentium. It is customary for a circus parade to have a float full of entertainers, and everyone is eager to jump on it.
The pattern of such fallacies is that an idea must be correct because everyone accepts it.
For example:
There is a long line of people buying tickets in front of a movie theater, and it is concluded that it must be an excellent film, both ideologically and artistically.
Seeing cars parked in front of a restaurant, one concludes that the food is good.
At the more extreme end of the spectrum, a certain ID of Kedi says that what the majority recognizes is the truth.
Using the fact that many people are for or against it as a reason to support or oppose an idea is a classic non-formal fallacy, and these types of arguments are extremely bad.
The logical fallacy of appealing to the many is sometimes insidious, and recognizing it requires reconstruction of the argumentation process.
Paraphrasing an example:
"If bath beds that utilize sun lamps to tan tan skin were unsafe, then thousands of Americans wouldn't use them every week. Not all sunlight is bad for your skin. In fact, I know people who go to the beach every year for one main purpose, to get a tan. Do you know anyone who goes to the beach and then hides in a hotel and doesn't leave the house?"
Sort out this argument:
Many Americans use tanning beds, and a large number of tourists go to the beach every year to get a tan. (Premise)
There must be no harm in something that most people do. (Premise)
So neither using a sunlamp bath bed nor tanning at the beach throw be harmful to your skin. (Conclusion)
After rearranging with the standard model, you'll see the second premise come to the fore, and when you see it, I don't think anyone will believe the conclusion it supports anymore.
Reconstructing the argumentation process helps to find the flaws in the argument.
