Unlike a steam engine, the internal combustion engine of a diesel locomotive needs to be driven to output power to its wheels. When the locomotive stops, its engine can continue to run. According to different power transmission modes, diesel locomotives can be divided into three categories: electric transmission, hydraulic transmission and mechanical transmission.

DC electric drive: both traction generator and motor are DC motors.

AC -DC electric drive: Three-phase AC synchronous generator is adopted, and the generated AC is converted into DC by rectifier and supplied to DC traction motor.

AC -DC- AC power transmission: Using a three-phase AC synchronous generator, the generated AC power is converted into DC power through a rectifier, and the DC power is converted into variable-frequency and voltage-regulated AC power through an inverter to supply AC traction motors.

As for the braking device, all electric diesel locomotives are equipped with high efficiency air brakes, and most of them also use/dynamic braking (resistance braking). In this device, kinetic energy is converted into electric energy by traction motor, and electric energy is converted into heat energy by resistor, and then radiated by heat sink. Dynamic braking can reduce the use and wear of braking devices in mountainous areas, but the effect is not obvious at low speed, and air braking is still needed.
