In the early days of liberation, Xi Bao Kun was the head of the New China Pingju Working Group and the chairman of Pingju Association. After joining China Pingju Theatre, he served as deputy director of China Pingju Theatre Art Committee, member of Chinese Dramatists Association and director of Beijing Branch of Chinese Dramatists Association.

Xi Bao Kun is a rare performing artist who knows both performance theory and artistic creation experience. Comrade Xi Bao Kun attended the student guidance training class of the Central Academy of Drama in 1954 and attended the lecture on the history of China literature in Beijing TV University from 1962 to 1965, both of whom graduated with honors. He lived up to the party's cultivation and high expectations, and under the guidance of the party's policy of "letting a hundred flowers blossom and bringing forth the new", he tried to combine traditional opera performances with realistic expression techniques and raise the performing art of Pingju to a new stage. For decades, he has created many vivid characters on the stage of Pingju.

He also participated in and directed dozens of plays, such as Loneliness in Kyubi no Youko, Frozen Glacier in the Millennium, Tears of Farmers, Arhat Money, Qin Xianglian, Spring Dawn in the Old Capital, Before Marriage, Red Liaison Station and Hu Xiang Case. At the same time, he also adapted and transplanted Mei Yu Liangyuan and Du Shiniang.
