How to evaluate the play directed by Li Liuyi?

When I saw Li Liuyi's Antigone at Peking University's Centennial Lecture Hall five years ago, I felt that there were too many flaws. The director had completely misinterpreted the script in the Chinese style. Originally, the play was about the conflict between the rules of God (the dead must be buried in order for their souls to cross the river Styx and enter the underworld) and the rules of man (traitors are not to be buried), but the director turned it into a story of women's right to rebel against the tyrant. "Misinterpretation" is not a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with foreign drama entering the Chinese cultural context and being interpreted differently, but the director adds a lot of fancy dramatic techniques, making the original smooth narrative of the ancient Greek tragedy a little bit fragmented-which is not wrong at all. But when you look at the narrative and the dramaturgy together, it's a bit baffling.

Simply put, I think these directors, by focusing too much on the so-called avant-garde theatrical techniques, have neglected the important thing - reading the script - and consequently forgotten about the audience sitting below the stage, and their ability to receive it. During the performance that day, some audience members kept leaving the stage in the middle of the performance. During the intermission, I was discussing the play with two of my classmates in the lobby, and some audience members approached me with a confused look on their faces, asking what the play was about. Director Li Liuyi likes to create a slow-paced atmosphere on stage, whether it's in the body, the lines or the choreography, which is his personal aesthetic preference and has nothing to do with right or wrong. Comprehensive several times the human art of adapting foreign drama experience, the future of this kind or careful consideration, the human art of the "nest will Hall" "Teahouse" to play to the hearty, but also a lot of good foreign scripts destroyed heartbreaking, can only say that it is more suited to the flavor of the tradition, too much like the pursuit of their own feelings to reconfigure all the things that are really not worth recommending.
