Classification of Botanical Medicines

Potions, pills and tablets are the three different dosage forms that are commonly used for botanical medicines.

If we have to keep some medicines aside for traveling abroad, then good options are pills, tablets and capsules.

With the development of botanical medicines, many new dosage forms are emerging, for example, creams, such as loquat paste, which is taken internally and is used to treat coughs; and black ointment, which is applied externally and is used to treat bruises. In addition, there are also dosage forms (such as cold and fever reducing dosage), and syrups suitable for children. The various dosage forms of botanical medicines meet the needs of different patients and make botanical medicines more acceptable to the general public.

So far, there have been three stages of development of botanical preparations. In the first stage, it is the traditional dan, pills, creams and bulk. The second stage, is the hydro-alcoholic or alcohol-water method of extraction, crude treatment technology and modern industrial preparation technology combined to make proprietary Chinese medicines. The third stage, is the use of modern separation technology and detection technology refined and quantitative modern plant medicine.
