Shanxi is one of the birthplaces of China opera art, which appeared in Zhou Pu Bangzi in Ming Dynasty and gradually developed into four major operas in Shanxi: Pu Opera, Jin Opera, Beilu Bangzi and Shangdang Bangzi.

Because it is produced in the middle of Shanxi Province, it is also called Zhonglu Bangzi, also known as "Chinese Opera". It is mainly popular in parts of north-central Shanxi Province, northern Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Hebei, and generally in Binzhou, Lvliang, Zhang Hu, Dabao and Wutai in the Jin dialect.
