The use of innovative fabrics and designs on jackets earned Thomas Burberry a loyal following, and by 1870 the store was well established.

In 1895, Burberry designed a trench coat for British officers called the Tielocken, which became the originator of today's trench coats. Early hunting and fishing clothes had to be ideally weatherproof, able to withstand considerable wind and rain while being well ventilated, and Burberry's garments fulfilled this requirement, providing customers with excellent clothing performance.
