What's the most irrational and anti-human traditional culture you've ever heard of?

Eunuchs in ancient China castration was not only a traditional form of punishment (it began in the Sui Dynasty), but also a way to get the position of serving the emperor. At the end of the Ming Dynasty there were about 70,000 eunuchs in the imperial palace. The fact that these men entered the palace to serve others while harming their own bodies is a sad thing in my opinion.
