Drum is a percussion instrument, which covers one or both sides of a solid (usually cylindrical) drum body with a taut membrane. Drums can be beaten by hand or with a drum pestle. Drum is an important instrument in African traditional music and modern music, and some bands are completely composed of percussion instruments dominated by drums. Besides being a musical instrument, drums were also used to spread information in many ancient civilizations.

China's drum can be said to be the earliest musical instrument in China culture. According to archaeological data, the earliest drum in China should be the "earth drum" unearthed from Majiayao culture.

Folk drums are different in north and south, commonly known as "southern bronze drums and northern leather drums". Thus, drums in China often have different characteristics according to different materials and regions. It is understood that in the Western Zhou Dynasty, drums can be divided into dozens.

At present, drums in China can be roughly divided into the following categories:

According to materials: earthen drum, pottery drum, wooden drum, jade drum, stone drum, iron drum, bronze drum, etc.

According to the shape and size: round drum, big drum, small drum, flat drum, etc.

According to special names: Taiping Drum, Tanggu, Hua Pengu, Pai Drum, Ju Gu, Octagonal Drum, Ancient Paintings, Waist Drum, Lottery Drum, etc. Among them, the rob drum is the smallest drum in China, which can only be tapped with fingers.

Western drums, big drums, middle drums, timpani drums, conga drums, bongo drums, jazz drums, etc. Jazz drum (also known as Drum set) is a percussion instrument, called Drum kit or Drumket in English, which integrates many percussion instruments. The basic combination includes a drum (bass drum), a small drum, two middle drums (tambourines), a bottom drum (bottom drum), a treading cymbal and two brass cymbals.

Jazz drums originated in the United States and were often used in jazz performances when jazz rose in the1920s. Jazz drums are played with sticks and brushes, while drums sound through pedaling. The diameters of drums are 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 inches, and the depths are mostly 14, 16 and 18 inches. The snare drum is called Little snare drum in English because it has a snare string at the bottom. The diameter of the drums used for jazz drums is about 13 or 14 inch, and the depth is usually 3~8 inches. The middle drum is a cylindrical drum, and its sound is similar to that of a small drum without chords, and it is placed on the big drum. The bottom drum is a kind of middle drum with feet, which is placed on the right side of the big drum of jazz drum group. Its diameters are 14, 16 and 18 inches, and its depth is about 14~ 16 inches. Pedal cymbals are used to fix the beat, and the dimensions are 13, 14 and 15 inch, among which 14 inch is the most common one, and the upper one is called the top and the lower one is called the bottom. The pedal cymbals stand on the left side of the drum group, and the way of playing is not just hitting with a drum stick.

In order to cope with the ever-changing music, the accessories of jazz drums are becoming more and more diversified. For example, in Latin music style, cowbells, tambourines, wooden fish or other kinds of tambourines can be added to jazz drums.
