The motto means "The Lord is my light", from Psalm 27 in the Bible.
"I think there are two things at the heart of the university spirit, the first is the pursuit of excellence in everything, and the second is free and open debate" - Andrew Hamilton, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, UK.
The University of Oxford, which has a history of more than 800 years, is the source of all universities in English-speaking countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, and enjoys a high status in the world. Hamilton said the university spirit embodied by Oxford is, first of all, the absolute pursuit of excellence, whether in teaching or research, will never rest on its laurels, the continuous pursuit of doing better.
At the other end of the spectrum, free and open debate is an important means of achieving excellence. Hamilton said that Oxford is an open place where everything can be brought out for open discussion, whether it is academic or administrative matters. He also singled out Oxford's unique mentorship system as very helpful in fostering the spirit of free debate.
