What are the traditional houses in China?
Siheyuan is a traditional quadrangle building in China. Its pattern is a courtyard surrounded by houses, usually consisting of a main room, an east-west wing and an inverted room. The courtyard is surrounded in the middle from all sides, hence the name quadrangle. Siheyuan can be traced back to the Zhou Dynasty before 3000 BC. It began to take shape in the Song Dynasty, and gradually improved in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and finally became the most distinctive living form in Beijing.
The so-called four-in-one, "four" refers to the east, west, south and north, and "combination" refers to enclosing all the houses and "combining" many elements including spirit and material together to form a "mouth" shape. After hundreds of years of construction, quadrangles in Beijing have formed a unique Beijing style from plane layout to internal structure and detail decoration.
Regular quadrangles in Beijing generally face south according to the east-west hutongs. The basic shape is the north room (main room), the south room (inverted room) and the east and west rooms, which are separated on all sides and surrounded by high walls to form a four-in-one and open a door. The gate is located in the southeast corner of the house. The total number of rooms is generally 3 rooms in the north room, 2 rooms in the front room, 5 rooms in the east room and 3 rooms in the west room, excluding 4 rooms in the south room.
