Dingzhou's 3 repertoires

The traditional repertoire of Yangge opera is divided into two categories: small plays and big plays, and small plays are commonly known as "juggling plays". The roles of Yangge opera were originally only clowns, small dancers, and young sheng "three small doors", and then on this basis added sousheng, Hua face, and Qingyi "three big doors". Its music and singing absorbed the characteristics of the clapper chamber, forming a system of compatibility between the song and the plate chamber, and the performance has been enriched and improved.

Ding County Yangge has a rich repertoire of plays with a wide range of areas, including love, filial piety, chastity, public cases, comedy and many other categories. Li Jinghan, a famous social scientist, collected and published "Dingxian Yangge Selection", which included nearly one hundred repertoires. The repertoire sung by Dingxian Yangge is mostly folk stories. The local people also call the rice-planting songs as "tethering wives' stakes" (mostly family plays about mothers-in-law). The traditional plays include "Double Lockers", "Old and Young Changers", "Wang Xiao Catching Feet", "Borrowing an Element", "Borrowing a Daughter to Hang a Filial Piety", "Wang Mama's Matchmaking", "Yang Wen Begging for Meals", "Yang Baxi Shaving Her Head", and "An An Delivering Rice", and so on. The transplanted repertoire includes "Tang Zhixian Trial of Grant", "Yang Baxi Tour of Spring", "Tianxian Match", "The Legend of the White Snake", "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", as well as some martial arts plays such as "Baishuitan", "Fighting Jiaozan", "Centipede Ridge", etc. Modern plays such as "Seizing the Seal", and "Tears and Tears of Vengeance" are staged as well. The art of Yangge is mostly characterized by small plays of life once in a lifetime. The recitation is life-oriented, mainly in dialect, and sometimes some rhyming white is used according to the needs of the play, which is good at singing and narrating. The lyrics are colloquial, easy to understand, full of life flavor, which is kind and touching to listen to. The structure of the lyrics is also very free, not subject to the limitations of the seven or ten sentences, some as few as three or five words, some as many as 20 or 30 words, and more liner notes, but they all rhyme; there are also times in order to emphasize a certain plot or a certain mood with the "superimposed sentences" sung over and over again, and so there are "nine-fold rice-planting song" said.
