Vancouver Chinese Film Festival Introduction and Details

Background

The Vancouver Chinese Film Festival (VCFF) is officially registered in British Columbia, Canada and has been held annually since 2013.

The Vancouver Chinese Film Festival is supported by the three levels of Canada *** and the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver, as well as the close attention of the global media, focusing on Chinese filmmakers at home and abroad, and is a great feast for the exhibition of Chinese films and the display of Chinese culture. The Vancouver Chinese Film Festival has now become one of the mainstream film festivals in Canada and is more influential internationally.

Starting from 2016, in order to promote international new filmmakers and spread Chinese culture, the organizing committee of the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival selects 5-10 Canadian outstanding young directors to go to China for a half-month cultural experience and shoot 10-minute documentaries to be screened at the festival. The five Canadian directors completed their works "A Piece of Woola", "Reclaiming the Dream", "Water Sound", "A Piece of Woola" and "Lotus Flower Drop" (also known as "I'd rather give up a meal"). Five young talented Canadian directors experienced half a month of deep experience of Chinese culture, and at the same time, actively show the Chinese culture with local characteristics to the attention of Canada, the screening has been unanimously praised.

In June 2017, the organizing committee of the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival once again sent four Canadian directors and five young American directors*** to Northwest China to carry out the "One Belt, One Road" "Seeing China in Gansu" for a 17-day filming. The Canadian directors encountered China's mother river, the Yellow River, visited the headquarters of China's famous miscellany book, The Reader, interviewed folk artists, experienced the lives of herders, and learned about the new city of Lanzhou. *** Completed 9 documentaries, including "Artistic Realm", "Stream Loss", "Old Paper Leaping", "True Beauty", "Forty Miles North", "Pulse to Pulse", "Yongtai Sheep Pavilion", "Tucheng", and "Shandan Nursery".

In 2018, the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival successfully held a branch in China and, in conjunction with Sichuan Normal University, debuted the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival Chinese University Student Host Competition, which attracted the participation of students from more than 100 colleges and universities across the country, and the participants who stood out from the competition were invited to go to Vancouver to serve as hosts for the 6th Vancouver Chinese Film Festival.

In 2019, the organizing committee of the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival, together with Southwest University, will hold the 7th Vancouver (International) Chinese Film Festival Host Competition for Chinese University Students and the Microfilm Competition, to promote more outstanding Chinese youth to the stage of international cultural communication.

Consul General of China in Vancouver, Ms. Liu Fei, said in her speech at the opening ceremony that she was very happy to attend the opening ceremony of the festival because it is a film festival hosted by young people. Vancouver is a city where multiculturalism is fully demonstrated, and she hopes that more young people will make their own contribution to the cultural exchange between China and Canada.

Huo Jianqi, who came to attend the festival, introduced the movie Xiao Hong in his speech. He said Xiao Hong was a famous female writer in China in the 1930s and 1940s, and the movie wanted to show the writer's achievements in writing, her difficult life experiences and her pursuit of women's liberation.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper sent a congratulatory letter to the festival, and both British Columbia Premier Jane Hui Chi and Vancouver Mayor Pinus Luo sent representatives to speak at the opening ceremony, expressing strong support for the festival and best wishes.
