English (English: English) is a West Germanic branch of the English language that was first spoken in medieval England and became the most widely spoken language in the world because of its vast colonies. The ancestral Anglo tribes of the English were among the Germanic tribes that later migrated to the region of the island of Great Britain known as England. Both names are derived from Anglia in the Baltic Peninsula.
The language is closely related to Frisian and Lower Saxon, and its vocabulary has been influenced by other Germanic languages, notably Scandinavian (North Germanic), and is largely written in Latin and French.
English has been developing for more than 1,400 years. The earliest form of English is a group of dialects of the West Germanic branch (Ingvaeonic) brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxon immigrants in the 5th century and known collectively as Old English. Middle English began in the late 11th century with the Norman Conquest of England;
In 1476, William Caxton introduced the printing press to England and began publishing the first printed books in London, expanding the influence of the English language. Since the 17th century, modern English has spread around the world under extensive British and American influence.
Through print and electronic media in all types of these countries, English has become one of the dominant international languages, as well as the dominant language in many regional and professional contexts, such as science, navigation, and law.
