So why is Saint Carmen's Day also called this festival? This comes from a very sad story. /kloc-in the 6th century, when the Spanish colonists came to the desert in northern Chile, they met with stubborn resistance from a tribal leader of the Indians and his daughter. The Indian princess is beautiful and brave, and the Spanish call her Tirana. Dramatically, the princess fell in love with a Portuguese prisoner and converted to Catholicism. The Indians thought it was an unforgivable betrayal and shot a pair of lovers who loved each other deeply.

Later, a missionary came here and lamented their story. A Catholic church named Our Lady of Carmen in Latin America was built here. So July 16 actually has two protagonists, one is the Catholic Saint Carmen, and the other is the Indian princess La Tirana.

Now the town where this church is located is also called Latina, which is 72 kilometers away from Iquique. Every July 12 to July 17. This quiet town with only about 500 people is full of festive atmosphere, with 350,000 believers, dancers and tourists, which is unprecedented.

The dancers' costumes are very gorgeous. Some people dance in ghost masks, while girls walk gracefully in the procession in loose skirts. Statues of the Virgin Carmen are everywhere in the square and church. Some devout believers bowed down all the way from entering the town until they reached the square and entered the church.

During the festival, hotels and guesthouses in the small town of Latina are basically full. Locals will rent their houses to tourists, and some tourists will live in other nearby towns. Believers and singers come not only from northern Chile, but also from neighboring Bolivia and Peru. Usually they will set up tents to live temporarily in the local area, and there may be serious traffic jams on the roads here, which shows the grand occasion of the festival.
