Is English spoken in the United States?

1. The official language of the United States is American English. Twenty-eight states have passed local laws to ensure the official status of English; three states recognize other languages as having parallel status to English: French in Louisiana, Hawaiian in Hawaii, and Spanish in New Mexico.

2. Spanish is also a common language in the United States, leaving only Hawaii and Alaska overseas, where Native languages are second; New Orleans and the Northeast, where the traditional Francophone cultural tradition is French, and North Dakota, where German is spoken.

3. Roughly in line with the reality of the local distribution of immigrants, such as Illinois is Polish, California, Nevada and Hawaii is Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines.
