How do the domestic architectural circles evaluate Wang Shu and his architectural works?
Wang Shu, dean of China Academy of Art Institute of Architecture, an architect born in 1960s, has been searching for his own philosophical expression in traditional buildings in China. From China Academy of Art Xiangshan Campus to Ningbo Art Museum, and then to the library of Zhengwen College of Soochow University, he interprets the contemporary architecture in his heart with the architectural techniques of ancient craftsmen and the concept of ecological environment protection.
In China Academy of Art Xiangshan Campus, which covers an area of 800 mu, Wang Shu brought China's traditional concept of space, poetry and aesthetics into contemporary architecture, so as to balance the huge campus with a not-so-high hill.
Bricks, tiles, eaves and wood, which are common in southern dwellings, make the buildings designed by Wang Shu full of the agility of Jiangnan water towns. Some buildings in Xiangshan campus are built with old bricks recovered from demolition, and some are built with double eaves with recycled tiles. Wang Shu said that when making a tile eaves, he would imagine the students watching the rain dripping down the tile eaves.
Wang Shu's architectural works and thoughts have gained wide international attention and recognition. 20 10 won the special honor award of the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale for his work "Decay Dome", becoming the first China architect to win the award. 20 1 1 won the gold medal of the French Architectural Society, and was the first China architect to win this international architectural award. In the same year, he was also hired by Harvard University Graduate School as the Honorary Professor of Kenneth Ge Tan for the academic year of 2011-2012, which was the first Chinese architectural scholar to receive this honor.
"What is more important than architecture is the humanistic atmosphere of a place. What is more important than technology is the clever language norms and ideas in simple construction methods." Standing in Xiangshan Campus of China Academy of Art, where green bricks and tiles can be seen everywhere, Wang Shu said meaningfully.
