Overview of hernia patch repair

A new surgical method for the treatment of extra-abdominal hernia, the surgery needs to be performed with the help of a synthetic patch, just like a piece of cloth to mend a hole in a dress, thus avoiding the tension generated by forcing the anatomical layers of different structures together and sewing them up.

Currently, most of the repair materials used in the clinic are imported patches made of woven polypropylene, which has good tensile strength and anti-folding properties. Patch is porous mesh sieve, which is conducive to water infiltration and tissue growth, generally placed in the body a few minutes after the adhesion with the tissue fixed. Patch is non-absorbable, will be retained in the body for a long time after surgery, but it has good compatibility with the body, rarely occur foreign body reaction, or only in the short term there is a slight discomfort. At the same time, the pore size of the patch is not conducive to bacterial "hiding", so it has good anti-infection ability.

A set of patches usually consists of a conical patch and a mesh patch. The tapered patch has eight petal-like structures in the center that are flexible and allow the patch to remain open in the body. The tapered patch is primarily used to fill the hernia ring and to withstand pressure from within the abdominal cavity. The mesh patch is oval and flat and is mainly used to strengthen the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, which has a round hole at one end for the passage of the spermatic cord.
