Master's Admissions Guide of School of Advanced Translation, Beijing Foreign Studies University

-

The School of Advanced Translation of Beijing Foreign Studies University was established in June, 1994.

Beijing Foreign Studies University held several advanced translation classes as early as 1950s and 1960s. 1979 Entrusted by the Government of China and United Nations Headquarters, the United Nations Interpretation Training Department was established to train simultaneous interpreters and translators for the United Nations. Most graduates work in UN agencies in new york and Geneva. Their professionalism and performance have been well received by the United Nations. During their work in China, many people served as translators for party and state leaders many times. The Translation Training Department has also trained a group of senior translators for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Culture, Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office and Chongqing Foreign Affairs Office.

Sir/madam:

Now I apply for simultaneous interpretation, and the relevant instructions for master students are as follows:

Simultaneous interpretation is one of the most difficult translation activities. In the tense environment of international conferences, it is not easy for an interpreter to listen and translate continuously. To learn this skill well, you need to have certain conditions, such as a solid foundation in English and Chinese, strong English listening and speaking ability, good pronunciation and intonation in English and Chinese, quick thinking, quick response, interest in international issues and wide knowledge. Therefore, the re-examination results of candidates are the main reason for admission. Candidates can make targeted preparations according to their own situation and professional requirements. As for the examination, the examination paper was issued by our college. Don't test theory, only test practice, the purpose is to examine students' actual translation ability. The basic English test paper is the same as other majors in English College.

About the second interview: 1, visual translation: orally translate an English manuscript (prepare for 5-6 minutes) into Chinese. 2. Retelling: First listen to the English recording (content length: 3-5 minutes) and listen to it twice in a row. You can take notes while listening, and then repeat what you hear in English. Interview: One English reading material, prepare for 10 minutes (you can take notes), and then answer questions according to the reading material.

The teaching mode of Translation College is mainly class (16- 18 class hours/week), which is different from the tutorial system of other majors.

The ratio of application to admission in 2006 was about 10: 1.

Not long ago, NASA announced that their measurements showed that the ozone hole over Antarctica had expanded to the southern Chilean city of punta arenas in the past two months. This is the largest hole ever observed by human beings. More seriously, this is the first time that the ozone hole covers densely populated cities.

Many people are familiar with the function of ozone. Ozone is about 25-30 kilometers from the ground and can absorb 99% of the sun's ultraviolet rays. It can be said that it is a natural barrier of the earth's ecological environment and an umbrella for human reproduction and survival. According to scientists' calculations, every time the ozone content in the atmosphere decreases by 1%, the amount of solar ultraviolet radiation will increase by 2%, and the number of human skin cancer patients will increase by 5% to 7%.

But now, it can be said that all residents of a city are at risk of collective skin cancer. For the health of residents, punta arenas and its neighboring areas were forced to declare a state of emergency. This is probably the first time that mankind has entered a state of emergency due to the ozone hole problem. The health department of Punta arenas has repeatedly warned people not to go out between noon 1 1 and 3 pm, because exposure to the sun for about 7 minutes will damage their skin.

According to scientists' observation, the ozone hole has reached more than 28 million square kilometers at present. It is chemicals such as freon that are constantly released in industrial production that make ozone thinner and thinner, and finally this huge hole is formed. Although the expansion of the ozone hole is also caused by the rising temperature in the Antarctic continent, the rising temperature is directly related to the massive release of carbon dioxide by human beings.

I hope Punta Arenas' alarm is the first and last time!

We sincerely hope that we will not go to war, strive for long-term stability and concentrate on domestic modernization.

After the end of the Cold War, the world situation has undergone major changes, the bipolar pattern has ended, and multipolarization has become the dominant direction of the evolution of the international pattern.

In recent years, under the impact of economic globalization, the original division of labor pattern and resource allocation mode are undergoing historic and important changes. Developed countries are adjusting, and so are newly industrialized countries, developing countries and countries with economies in transition, although the contents and difficulties of adjustment are different.

Sanctions are a blunt instrument that can sometimes be useful. For Iraq, they forced its terrible dictator to spit out almost all his deadliest weapons. Ten years later, the perspective has changed. In the past 15 months, Saddam Hussein was still in power, and no UN inspector was on the scene to stop him from reinventing his dirtiest toy. At the same time, sanctions almost destroyed his country: its health and education systems have collapsed; Its infrastructure has rusted; Its middle class has fallen into poverty; Its children are dying. Many people now think it is necessary to change the policy.

The oil-for-food program adopted by the UN Security Council in 1996 was originally intended to save ordinary Iraqis from sanctions. Iraq is allowed to sell a certain amount of oil in exchange for "humanitarian" goods. Denis Halliday, an experienced UN official, was in charge of the project for two years, but then resigned in disgust (his successor resigned a few weeks ago). Mr. Halliday has now written "genocide" straight out. He and others described how the representatives of the United States and Britain in the sanctions Committee insisted that anything they suspected, no matter how far away, had a dual purpose. The list of suspicious goods ranges from heart-lung machines to trolleys, from fire-fighting equipment to detergents, from pumps to pencils.

Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, confirmed some of these views in his report on Iraq sanctions submitted to the Security Council this month. He revealed how far the oil-for-food program is from alleviating the tragedy in Iraq. Mr. Annan spread his criticism everywhere, but he was particularly disturbed by, firstly, the dangerous dilapidated state of Iraq's oil industry, and secondly, the capricious delay of the sanctions Committee in approving the delivery of materials to hospitals: at present, drugs and medical equipment worth about $/kloc-0.5 billion were detained. At one time, outsiders had a deep-rooted view of Iraq's sanctions, thinking that the situation was either black or white. Now there is a big gray area, a persistent question: Is sanctions still the right policy? The author recorded the impact of sanctions on the lives of ordinary Iraqis, and the reasons for the change were quite convincing. He who hesitates should pay attention.

People are divided into men and women, but does the law talk about gender?

The Constitution of China clearly stipulates that women enjoy equal rights with men in politics, economy, culture, society and family. Since men and women have equal rights, the law should be gender-neutral, so as to achieve equality between men and women and truly achieve fairness.

But in fact, today, when women are protected by law, respected by society and equal between men and women, the phenomenon of inequality between men and women still exists more or less. This is the "sequela" left by the history of "men are superior to women" and women are attached to men. So we have to face the reality that although the status of contemporary women has been greatly improved, compared with men, they are still a vulnerable group that needs to be taken care of.

In view of this phenomenon, China's current laws give special care to women, including the special law on the protection of women's rights and interests, and there are also special protection clauses in the marriage law, inheritance law and other legal provisions. There is no such special protection for men. From this perspective, the law also talks about "gender".

A little more female perspective in legislation is more practical for contemporary legislators. Not to mention the inequality between men and women in real life, that is, the fact that most legislators are men may make our laws unconsciously bear the mark of men. Therefore, legislators must go beyond the existing social habits and cast more perspectives on women, a vulnerable group. In legislation, there should be more female perspectives and more care and protection for women.

Women are mothers, daughters and sisters ... a little more female perspective in legislation does not mean ignoring men's rights and interests, but to maximize the legal equality between men and women, so as to achieve equality between men and women in real life.

If one day, the law no longer needs to pay special attention to women's gender perspective, then men and women will be truly equal.

In England in the early17th century, the Stuart dynasty increasingly resorted to "forced loans" to finance its own expenses-if the loans were not repaid, the lenders would have no recourse. This practice is one of the many obvious signs that the regime has not promised to protect property rights. Other signs include direct confiscation of land and funds, compulsory public procurement at below-market prices, willingness to dismiss judges who oppose the king, and the sale of monopoly rights over various profitable economic activities. The arbitrary exercise of this sovereign power was interrupted in the civil war in the middle of this century, but the restoration of the monarchy was accompanied by the return of the same excesses.

/kloc-the glorious revolution of 0/688 brought about a series of fundamental changes in the political system, which restricted the monarch from exercising his power at will. This revolution established the supreme position of parliament in taxation and auditing royal expenses. These steps were taken with the establishment of the Bank of England, which exercised important control over public finance. The result of these changes is a fairer distribution of power among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government. These restrictions on the arbitrary exercise of power have greatly enhanced the state's ability to finance public expenditure by issuing debt.

From the development of debt market, we can see the influence of these changes in political system and property rights protection. In 65438 +0688, the royal government can only issue bonds equivalent to 2% to 3% of GDP-and the term is very short and the interest rate is very high. By 1697, the royal government can issue bonds equivalent to 40% of GDP, and repay the principal and interest at a lower interest rate and for a longer period. The emergence of a well-functioning public debt market, in turn, is conducive to the development of private capital markets, thus helping to finance the subsequent industrial revolution.

Globalization is changing the world. Although it has brought great benefits to some countries and individuals, it has also rebounded, because the distribution of these benefits is so unequal, and because the global market has not been supported by the values and rules that solve key social problems, such as protecting human rights, labor standards and the environment. Globalization has also inadvertently made it easier for what I call an "uncivilized society"-crime, terrorism, drug and arms trafficking-to cross national borders. Our challenge today is to make globalization an engine to free people from hardships, not a force to suppress them.

The past half century has brought unprecedented economic growth. Today most people are expected to live longer than their parents. They get better nutrition, enjoy better health, get better education and generally face more favorable economic prospects. But there is also widespread poverty and despair. More than 1 100 million people must live on less than 1 dollar a day. Significant inequalities still exist within and between countries. Diseases such as AIDS and malaria may undo years of progress. The "digital divide" between technology-rich countries and technology-poor countries has aggravated the gap between the rich and the poor.
