Guangzhou

Provincial capital of Guangdong Province, political, economic, scientific and technological, educational and cultural center, the largest seaside city in southern China.

Guangzhou is located at 113°17' east longitude, 23°8' north latitude, located in the south of mainland China, south-central Guangdong Province, the northern edge of the Pearl River Delta. Bordering the South China Sea and neighboring the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region, Guangzhou is China's southern gate to the world. Guangzhou is a hilly area. The terrain is high in the northeast and low in the southwest, with mountainous areas in the north and northeast, hills and terraces in the center, and the alluvial plain of the Pearl River Delta in the south. The Pearl River, China's third largest river, flows through the center of Guangzhou.

Area, administrative divisions and population

Guangzhou has a total area of 7,434.4 square kilometers, of which the 10 districts under the city's jurisdiction cover an area of 3,718.5 square kilometers, accounting for 50.02% of the city's total area, and the two county-level cities cover an area of 3,715.9 square kilometers, accounting for 49.98%.

In 2005, approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the State Council, the former 10 districts and 2 cities of Guangzhou: Yuexiu District, Dongshan District, Haizhu District, Liwan District, Tianhe District, Baiyun District, Huangpu District, Fangcun District, Huadu District, Panyu District, as well as Conghua City, Zengcheng City, two county-level cities, in which the Yuexiu District and Dongshan District were merged to form the Yuexiu District; the Liwan District and the Fangcun District were merged to form the Nansha District; the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone was changed to Luogang District; and the Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone to become Gang District; Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone was changed to Nansha District.

The new Guangzhou has 10 districts and 2 cities: Yuexiu, Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe, Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Panyu, Luogang, and Nansha districts, as well as two county-level cities, Conghua and Zengcheng. The number of permanent residents in Guangzhou is about 7.2 million.
