How do Portland municipal buildings deal with architectural traditions?
This is a public building integrating office, service and exhibition. It was built in 1982, located in downtown Portland, USA. This is a huge building that is almost cubic. Not only the function is reasonable, but also the decoration of the facade and the layout of the internal space show unique symbolic significance. It is a milestone in the creation of large-scale post-modernism architecture and occupies an important position in the history of architecture.
This building has a magnificent momentum, and it is integrated with the surrounding buildings without belittling the scale of the surrounding buildings. Its interior depicts the familiarity of urban civilization that people have experienced for a long time by means of images. The building plane is square, on the one hand, it is consistent with the outline of the block, on the other hand, it reflects the centripetal nature of the city "home". The transportation hub is in the center of the plane, with elevators and stairs, plus bathrooms and electromechanical rooms, forming a core. The building has simple modeling, simple internal and external materials, easy construction and low cost. The window scale has a classical style, which also saves the cost of cooling and heating. The indoor light is soft and the space is not too empty, which is completely different from the luxurious commercial buildings of modernism. Portland architecture tries to express the pride and simple identity of an ordinary American citizen, which reminds people of the democratic spirit of the American pioneer era in the past.
In order to emphasize the association and imitation of architecture, the facade adopts three stages. Grignard-style "classical column" deformation appears in the middle of the main facade, exaggerating the grandeur of the building entrance, and offsetting this majesty with the "mask" of the column. The activity area closest to the public is arranged in the pedestal, which symbolizes Portland's rainy climate and perennial green ground in the form of green arcade. In the base part, there are three corridors and a shop along the street, emphasizing that the street is a major urban form. Municipal institutions are located in the middle section, and the large-area glass curtain wall on the facade not only accepts and reflects urban life, but also symbolizes the publicity and aggregation characteristics of indoor activities. The fifth floor of the upper section is a rented house, supported on two big pillars like lintels. Although the sides of the building are not as vivid as before and after, the huge colonnade seems to support the building and guide people from the business district to the park. Mask-shaped columns are decorated with garlands and connected together. This wreath represents the traditional theme of welcome and hospitality in Portland.
