Extended information:
Importance of Newspapers:
Firstly, most of the serious news that the public reads comes from newspapers. No one has done quantitative statistics to tell us what percentage of the overall news is produced by newspapers. But some random "smart" people have estimated it, and they say it's no less than 80 percent.
Maybe TV has more influence, but in my experience working in the TV media, TV reporters often look for news in newspapers. Even with the new media that everyone touts, most of the wonderfully written commentary is based on the news provided by the newspapers.
While the usefulness of social media such as microblogging and WeChat is unquestionable, most users of these services do not follow the newspaper industry's journalistic standards. So while new media has a huge amount of content, there is still very little of it that is truly of high quality.
So that's the first reason newspapers should continue to exist: they dig up the news, everyone else just packages it. The health of the newspaper industry is not a trivial issue, because newspapers are a medium that sets the agenda for the rest of the media.
Second, newspapers are not just information providers; they organize the world in a coherent way every day. To put it in an extreme way, a well run newspaper, if the reader fails to go and read one of the articles on it, is tantamount to losing the way to see and relate to the world in another possible light. Newspapers are places for public ****talk, provided of course that they are well run.
Thirdly, the raison d'être of a newspaper is also related to its practitioners; how many people go into the newspaper business with a sense of purpose for the profession of journalism. Many reporters and editors see their role as "appeasing the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable." Many journalists believe they are ultimately working for their readers -- not for the editors, publishers, companies or investors who manage them, but for the readers who enjoy their journalism.
We are all familiar with stories of journalists who have lost their jobs for the dignity of their profession. They have refused directives forbidding them to publish, and they have been unwilling to sell their consciences for political and business interests. They do so to remain loyal to their readers, and sometimes entire editorial boards take such a stand.
Fourth, for newspaper reporters and editors who value their profession, the "entry" of amateurs into the newsroom is a cause for concern. They threaten professional standards. The recently deceased American journalist Helen Thomas, perhaps the most famous White House correspondent of the past 50 years, worried about the decline of professional journalism. "Everyone who owns a computer thinks he's a journalist.
Everyone who owns a cell phone thinks he's a photographer." She sees the trend as "frightening because you can compulsively destroy the lives and reputations of others without even realizing it. There are no editors, no standards, no ethics, and we are at a crossroads.
In my day, when your mom told you she loved you, a good reporter would have verified that clearly, too. Now a lot of very worthy newspapers have let it slide. It's a crisis."
