The staple food of Nantong people is rice, flour and its products. There are three kinds of rice: indica rice, japonica rice and glutinous rice. In Nantong, citizens like to eat rice (japonica rice). Glutinous rice, commonly known as MC Davi, is used for steaming cakes, making zongzi, rubbing rice balls and making rice wine. Generally not used for cooking.
In the old society, it was difficult for most farmers to eat several meals of pure rice all year round. Even wealthy farmers always eat rice porridge made of rice and a small amount of rice after threshing. They didn't grind some rice until the rice was harvested and the new valley appeared, so that the whole family could taste the new rice.
Meat dishes are mainly pig, beef, mutton and aquatic products. Nantong people like to eat beef. There are East Beef Lane and West Beef Lane to the south of Cross Street, which are named after the concentration of beef shops.
