Overview
Link?ping is one of Sweden's famous "university towns". The University of Link?ping, which currently has about 28,000 students, has two main campuses, Valla in the west and US in the center of the city; it also has a campus in the northeast of the city (about 30 minutes by train). The University also has a campus in Kita-K?ping, a short distance northeast of the city (about 30 minutes by train).
The city's motto, "D?r idéer blir verklighet", which means "turning ideas into reality", is a clear expression of the city's desire to combine the research resources of the university with the local economy and industry. The city's desire to combine the research resources of the university with the local economy and industry is clearly reflected in this concept. In order to implement this concept, the city has also planned the Mj?rdevi Science Park, which is located directly west of Link?ping University's main campus in Vara.
The city is the second oldest parish in Sweden, and as such is one of the country's historical and cultural centers. The city's Domkyrka is the symbol of the city's skyline, and its towering spire can be seen from almost everywhere in the central part of the city.
History
As early as the 12th century Link?ping was the parish center city of East Jutland, and in 1128 the Vreta kloster (Vreta Monastery) was built in the city. This monastery was later to become the oldest part of what is now Link?ping's domed church. (It has of course been destroyed and rebuilt several times in the meantime.)
In the 13th century, in the time of Bishop Bent, part of what is now Link?ping slott (commonly known locally as "the castle", slottet) was built. This was the long building that we can now see in the bishop's grounds, fronting O Street (?gatan). However, in the middle of the 13th century, during the reign of the Swedish king Magnus Ratulos (also known as Magnus III), it belonged to a monastery. Link?ping was also an important stop on the Eriksgata, an important ritual that the new King of Sweden had to perform after his accession to the throne.
Generally speaking, Christian centers have a good educational environment, and Link?ping is no exception. The earliest church school in the area was built in 1266, and it is also the earliest known in Sweden.
The last bishop to have a "castle" as his residence was Bishop "Hans Blask". Today it is the seat of the county government of East G?taland, and is also the site of the Castle-Domed Church Museum.
In Link?ping in the early 18th century, in 1598, the Battle of Stombrugh, which was the trigger for the 30-year Battle of Sweden (1599-1629), was fought near Link?ping between Duke Carl, who became King Carl IX of Sweden, and his nephew, Sigismund. Thirteen state advisors (riksr?d) and a bird hunter were arrested for supporting Higismund's side, and after a year's trial, in 1600, five of them were executed in the "Link?pings blodbad". The deaths of five of them in the "Link?pings blodbad".
In 1627, the Link?ping Gymnasium, the third oldest gymnasium in Swedish history, was founded in Link?ping. The school is a descendant of the city's original parochial school, which has survived through various eras and is still an important public educational institution, now known as Katedralskolan i Link?ping (Link?ping Cathedral School). It is now known as the "Katedralskolan i Link?ping" - named after the city's largest domed church, the Link?ping Cathedral.
On January 29, 1700, Link?ping suffered a serious fire. The fire spread so quickly that it destroyed almost all the buildings in the business district, with the exception of a few, such as Link?ping Castle and the Dome Church.
In the 20th century, Link?ping's urban area has expanded considerably. This was made possible by the establishment of the famous aerospace manufacturing company SAAB in 1937 and the University of Link?ping in the city in 1975.
In 1987 Link?ping celebrated its 700th anniversary.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, Link?ping, together with its neighboring city of Nordk?ping, has become Sweden's fourth largest urban agglomeration.
Cityscape
The Dome Cathedral
The old buildings of Gamla LinkopingThe 107-meter-high tower of the Dome Cathedral of Linkoping is the most prominent in the city sketch of Linkoping. The dome church itself is also a landmark of the city. As the regional cathedral, the church was built in the Gothic style, and as a result, the architectural style of the entire city has been profoundly influenced by it. Previously, the city had debated whether or not to limit the height of other buildings in the city in order to maintain the city's appearance; as a result, the 17-storey high-rise "Drottningtornet" (Queen's Tower) was built, which attracted a lot of controversy.
Adjacent to the south of the domed church, the City Hall, with its yellow facade, was originally built as a dormitory for a parochial school. On the same block are Link?ping Castle and the Bishop's House, although the latter is a misnomer - it now houses the offices of the East Yotland County Council, while the Bishop actually has a residence not far away.
Between the 1950s and 1960s, Link?ping saw the construction of Gamla Link?ping. This was an area of traditional Swedish wooden buildings, most of which are still in use as craftsmen's workshops, museums or houses.
Link?ping is home to a number of interesting buildings, such as the masonry fortress Frimurarhotellet, the Miljonpalatset, and the Million Dollar Mansion. Miljonpalatset, Gamla vattentornet and the Cathedral School. As the 21st century progressed, many buildings began to incorporate different styles, such as the "Link?ping Parish and County Library" (Link?pings stifts- och landsbibliotek), the "Queen's Tower", the "McKnight's Tower", the "McKnight's Tower", the "McKnight's Tower" and the "McKnight's Tower". ", "Mj?rdevi Center" and "Cloetta Center", all of which have modern architectural styles.
Old Link?pingThe Link?ping district has been built up over the years and has an inverted 'V' shape in its geography. In the center, there is a large blank area that was converted from a former military drill area into a nature reserve with a large oak forest. This blank area is a major obstacle to transportation links between the eastern and western parts of the city. For this reason, the city's recent plan to continue expanding the southeast wing of the city has drawn criticism. Critics say the plan will divide the city, with residential neighborhoods in the southeast, commercial and industrial areas in the north, and the university district in the inaccessible west.
The greenery and parks in Link?ping's urban areas are relatively well built and well laid out, making them extremely accessible to most residents. The large park "Garden Society" (Tr?dg?rdsf?reningen) is situated in the heart of the center of the city; the "Rydsskogen" and "Valla skogen" (Valla forests) are also located in the center of the city. Rydsskogen" and "Valla skogen" both became nature reserves earlier. However, the idea of a "thoroughfare" or "Valla road" through the Valla forest to improve the traffic between the east and west parts of the city has been debated over and over again, and has not yet been finalized.
Cultural life
Main entrance to the new library In September 1996, the 700-year history of the Link?ping Library building came to a less-than-perfect end after a serious fire. Shortly thereafter, however, a new library building was rebuilt on the same site and reopened in March 2000 to patrons. Instead of following tradition, the new library building was built in a bright and modern architectural style. This makes the building stand out.
Other important cultural facilities or groups in the city are the East Yotland County Museum (?sterg?tlands l?nsmuseum), the East Yotter Towers Theatre (?stg?tateatern, where youth choirs perform from time to time), the Arts Gallery, and the Link?ping Symphony Orchestra. Link?ping has produced a number of highly accomplished choirs of national standard.
Many famous musical artists and groups started their careers at the famous "Skylten" (signposts) near Link?ping's train station (j?rnv?gsstationen). Among others, Lars Winnerb?ck, Louise Hoffsten, Pusjkins and Cloudberry became famous.
In Link?ping, people can also visit the Fun SkatePark. It is currently the largest concrete rink in the Nordic countries. High-level international skating competitions are regularly held here.
Link?ping's daily city newspaper, the East Jorda Correspondent (?stg?ta Correspondenten, or Corren), was first published in 1838. The newspaper is distributed throughout the western part of the province of East Yotland. The city also used to have another daily newspaper, East G?tter (?stg?ten), which was owned by the Swedish Social Democratic Party, but was discontinued in the early 1990s for some reason.
The local television channel, NollEttan, was born out of an information channel that was co-founded by the city's public housing company and the city's energy company*** between 1996 and 1997. The channel now broadcasts a broader range of local sports and news programs. Initially, the channel's programs were limited to local Link?ping-related content, but today, many years later, the channel's coverage has expanded to include the entire province of East Yotland.
Education
Link?ping has had all the elements of an academic city since the church facilities were built there. And today, the city remains one of the largest university towns in the whole of Sweden. Link?ping University currently has around 27,000 students and is one of Sweden's larger national universities. The university also has a campus in the neighboring city of P?yk?ping (Link?ping Campus); in Link?ping itself, it has mainly the US Campus (University Hospital Campus), where the medical school is the main focus, and Campus Valla, which is the main campus of the university.
Link?ping also has a number of "gymnasieskola", such as the Katedralskolan (Link?ping Cathedral School), founded in 1627, the Folkungaskolan (National Youth School), the Anders Jungstedt Higher School (Anders Jungstedt Higher School), the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan, the Folkungaskolan and the Folkungaskolan. Anders Ljungstedts gymnasium and Berzeliusskolan. Other representative schools of the educational model are the Valla folkh?gskola (Valla National Technical College).
Economy
Most of Link?ping's businesses are in the technology sector. Saab is the leading company in the region with about 4,900 employees (2003). Ericsson, a leading telephone company, employs about 1,100 people (2003) at its GSM cell phone manufacturing plant in the city. In addition, the city also has some more important manufacturing companies of consumer goods for daily life of the residents, such as: Arla, Scan and so on.
The Mj?rdevi Science Park is a booming technology center in Link?ping, and at the end of 2005 the total number of companies in the park*** was about 4000 employees. The park is also the cradle of many well-known technology companies - IT start-ups such as Industrial Financial Systems (IFS), Intentia Software (Movex) and Allegro Software (Guda) were incubated here.
Link?ping's final retail location is Tornby, directly north of the city. World-famous home furnishings company IKEA and its retail malls IKEA Tower and Biltema have opened large warehouse outlets here. Tumby district is in 2005 to find all of Sweden's non-central city business district turnover first crown.
