From orpiment to "loose orpiment", why did the pigment become the pronoun of "nonsense"?
In ancient times, orpiment was used as correction fluid. The color of orpiment was similar to that of paper, and its texture was fine, hard and soft. When orpiment was used to correct mistakes, it not only covered up the black ink, did not damage the paper, but also ensured that it would not fall off for a long time. This word first appeared in the Jin Dynasty. There was a man named Wang Yan in the Jin Dynasty, who was eloquent and liked the knowledge of Zhuang Zi, but his research was not deep. When talking with people, he often started to talk at will, and his preface was inconsistent with what he had said before. People laughed at him and said that his mouth seemed to bring his own "orpiment correction fluid", so he changed it as he said. So it became the pronoun of "nonsense".
Actually, orpiment, also known as cockscomb, is an orange-yellow slightly transparent mineral, which can be used as a pigment or a fading agent. Generally speaking, although the composition of "orpiment" is different from that of today's "correction fluid", they have the same function-correcting typos.
orpiment is lemon yellow, mostly in the form of fine particles, flakes or columnar blocks, with pearl luster. In ancient times, yellow paper was usually used to write, and if it was wrong, it was altered with orpiment. Are ancient inventions so advanced? So who invented it and how did it apply?
Female yellow is a brilliant stroke of Dunhuang in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Red, blue, yellow, white and black are the traditional five colors in China, while female yellow is the most artistic color among yellow. Orpiment is also the oldest painting pigment in China. In ancient times, orpiment was abundant in the state of orpiment in Dunhuang County, Gansu Province, so orpiment became an inevitable pigment in the murals of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. That's what paint means when it becomes "nonsense".
