Old Beijing "gatehouse"

In addition to the palace gate, courtyard gate and golden column gate, the houses in Beijing are the gatehouses of ordinary people.

There are the following street gates and gatehouses in Beijing:

Erpo Bishuiling Gate, Hua Lun Qianmen, Daoshimao Gate, Ruyi Gate, Wall Hanging Gate, etc.

1 Qingshuiling Gate This street gate is the most exquisite, labor-intensive and expensive gate in the civilian courtyard. Its gatehouse looks like the roof of a house and is divided into front slope and back slope. The two slopes are composed of yin and yang tiles, and the top is made of cylindrical tiles. The whole street gate is painted blue-black from top to bottom (some courtyard gates are painted white in the late Republic of China), and the top of the gate building looks like a fish back, so this kind of door jargon is also called "fish ridge gate". At the top and both ends of this gatehouse, there are upturned ridges, which are shaped like a street gatehouse taking off. Now this kind of street gatehouse and gatehouse can still be seen in the big alley.

2. Hua Lun Qianmen The gatehouse of this street gate is made of bricks at the upper four corners of the door, and several interconnected copper coins shaped like excircles are built between bricks with blue tiles in order to get rich and go home. So Beijingers call this street gate "Hua Lun Money Gate". The difference between Hua Lun Qianmen and Qingshuiling Gate is that the bricks and joints of this door are exposed, and it is not necessary to level with gypsum. Old people say that this is called going up the steps step by step, and there is money on the steps. In order to highlight the shape of spending money made of tiles, the construction workers mixed mud with white ash, painted the spending part white, and then painted it around with blue-gray water. In this way, the structure and black-and-white outline of the gatehouse make people see more clearly.

The most street gate in Beijing is Taoist hat, which looks like a hat worn by Taoist priests and has a front slope and a back slope. However, the Taoist hat is the name of our laity, and Taoism itself is called pure Yang towel, which is said to commemorate Lv Dongbin, the ancestor of Taoism.

3. The gatehouse with a Taoist hat is also a replica of the Qingshuiling gatehouse, except that there is no ridge at the top of the gatehouse.

4. Follow the wall door. Inside the wall door are mostly small yards with only a few houses, and some find a street wall to open a door in the courtyard. This kind of door that opens with the wall has no gorgeous gatehouse, and some are the same as the top of the wall, but slightly higher than the left and right walls.
