Su Shi's career experience is bumpy. 1061 (Jia You six years), Su Shi should be in the system of science exams, that is, usually called "three years of the Beijing investigation", into the third class, "a hundred years first", authorized by the Dali assessor, signing the book of the Fengxiang Province magistrate. After his mother died of illness in Bianjing, he returned to his home in 1069 (the second year of Xining), and he was still authorized to serve in the court. When he joined the court, it was the time when the Northern Song Dynasty started to have political crisis, and the crisis was hidden behind the prosperity, when Emperor Shenzong took the throne and appointed Wang Anshi to support the change of law. Many of Su Shi's friends and teachers, including his mentor Ouyang Xiu, who had first recognized him, were forced to leave the capital because of political disagreements with the new prime minister, Wang Anshi, over the implementation of the new law. The old rains of the dynasty withered away, and what Su Shi saw in his eyes was no longer the "peaceful world" that he had seen when he was twenty years old.　On his way back to the capital, Su Shi wrote a letter against the new law because he saw the damage it had done to the common people, and because he was conservative in his political thinking, he disagreed very much with Wang Anshi, the Councillor of the government, and thought that the new law would not be convenient for the people. One of the results of this is that, like his friends and teachers who were forced to leave the capital, he was not allowed to be in the court. So Su Shi sought his own exile and was transferred to Hangzhou as a general magistrate. From then on, Su Shi had a misunderstanding of Wang Anshi and the other reformers throughout his life.

Su Shi encountered the first disaster in his life. In 1079, less than three months after his arrival in Huzhou, Su Shi was arrested and sent to prison for writing poems satirizing the new law and for "slandering the prime minister in writing," a crime known as the "Wutai Poetry Case. The Case of Wutai Poetry".　Su Shi spent 103 days in prison, and was on the verge of being beheaded several times. Fortunately, during the Northern Song Dynasty, the state policy of not killing the scholars was set during the reign of Emperor Zhao Kuangyin, and Su Shi was able to escape from this fate.　After his release from prison, Su Shi was demoted to the position of Deputy Reinforcement Envoy of Huangzhou (present-day Huanggang City, Hubei Province) (equivalent to the modern-day vice-captain of the Self-Defense Force). This position is quite low, and no real power, and at this time Su Shi after this battle has become disillusioned, Su Shi to the office, depressed, had many times to Huangzhou outside the Chibi mountain tour, wrote "Chibi Foo", "after the Chibi Foo" and "Nian Nujiao - Chibi Huai Gu" and other ancient masterpieces, as a way to send his banishment when the ideological feelings. In his spare time, he led his family to reclaim a piece of sloping land to the east of the city and planted fields to help make ends meet. The alias "Dongpo Jushi" was given to him at this time.　Song Shenzong (1084 Yuanfeng seven years), Su Shi left Huangzhou, was ordered to go to Ruzhou. Due to the long and tiring journey, Su Shi's toddler unfortunately died prematurely. As the journey to Ruzhou was long and exhausting, coupled with the pain of losing his son, Su Shi wrote a letter to the court, requesting that he not go to Ruzhou for the time being, but first reside in Changzhou, which was later approved. When he was ready to return to Changzhou, Emperor Shenzong died.

When Su Shi saw the emerging forces desperately trying to suppress Wang Anshi group of figures and the abolition of the new law, and the so-called "King's Party," but a hill of raccoons, once again remonstrated with the emperor.　He attacked the corruption exposed after the old party came to power, thus, he aroused the strong opposition of the conservative forces, and was falsely accused and framed.　Su Shi to this point is neither tolerated in the new party, but also can not be seen in the old party, and thus once again to seek external transfer.
