What are the five major projects?

The five major projects refer to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the West-East Gas Transmission Project, the West-East Power Transmission Project, the South-to-North Water Transfer Project and the Three Gorges Project.

1, Qinghai-Tibet Railway Project

Qinghai-Tibet Railway, referred to as Qinghai-Tibet Railway for short, is a Class I national railway connecting Xining City, Qinghai Province to Lhasa City, Xizang Autonomous Region. It is one of the four major projects in China in the new century, the first railway leading to the hinterland of Tibet, and the plateau railway with the highest altitude and the longest route in the world.

2. West-to-East Gas Transmission Project

The main task of the West-to-East Gas Transmission Project is to transport natural gas from Tarim Basin in Xinjiang to Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, passing through Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang. The project includes the exploration and development of natural gas resources in Tarim Basin, the construction of long-distance natural gas pipeline from Tarim to Shanghai, and the construction of supporting facilities for downstream natural gas utilization.

3. West-to-East Power Transmission Project

Power transmission from the west to the east is one of the landmark projects in the western development, and it is also a major strategic decision made by the state to promote regional coordinated development and realize the optimal allocation of power resources throughout the country. Power transmission from the west to the east is to transform the energy of western provinces and regions rich in coal and hydropower resources into electricity resources and transport them to the eastern coastal areas where electricity is scarce.

4. South-to-North Water Diversion Project

The South-to-North Water Transfer Project is a strategic project in People's Republic of China (PRC), which is divided into three routes: east, middle and west. The starting point of the East Line Project is located in Jiangdu Water Control Project, Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. The starting point of the mid-line project is Danjiangkou Reservoir in the middle and upper reaches of the Han River, and the water supply areas are Henan, Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin.

5. Three Gorges Project

The Three Gorges Project is called the Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River. The whole project includes a mixed gravity dam, a sluice, a hydropower station behind the dam, a permanent ship lock and a ship lift. The Three Gorges Project consists of a dam. The hydropower station and navigation structure are composed of three parts, with a total construction period of 18 years.
