Kunqu, formerly known as "Kunshan cavity", "Kunqiang", is an ancient Chinese opera voice, theater, since the Qing Dynasty is known as "Kunqu", now also known as the "Kun Opera. Kunqu is one of the oldest types of traditional Chinese opera, and is also one of the treasures of traditional Chinese culture and art, especially opera, and is known as an "orchid" in the hundred gardens.
Kunqu originated in the area of Kunshan (Taicang Prefecture) in Suzhou at the end of the Yuan Dynasty (the middle of the 14th century), and is known as one of the four major voices of the Ming Dynasty, along with Haiyan Cavity, Yuyao Cavity, and Yiyang Cavity in Jiangxi Province, which are all part of the Southern Opera system. The Kunshan cavity began to be only a folk tune and a small song. Its distribution area was limited to Suzhou at the beginning, but during the Wanli period, it was expanded to the south of the Yangtze River and the north of the Qiantang River with Suzhou as the center, and it also flowed into Beijing at the end of the Wanli period. In this way, the Kunshan opera became the most influential vocal theater from the middle of the Ming Dynasty to the middle of the Qing Dynasty.
The repertoire of Kunqu is rich, and the scripts are elegant, literary, and many of the chants are in fact poetic poems of elegance and poignancy. Kunqu became the first vocal theater with the most writers and works in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Kunqu has a complete performance system and a unique vocal system, its pronunciation is more concerned about the four voices, strict adherence to the meter, the board eye, the singing voice is round and soft, melodious and slow; its tunes are the Chinese classical literature of the tune, each opera is composed of a set of tunes. The tunes are fresh and melodious, and the performances are beautiful and touching. The orchestra plays the flute, and also uses the pipe (Xiao), sheng, pipa and other instruments.
Kunqu's music, music, performance and dance had a great influence on other styles of opera, and the literature, music, dance, art, and performance of Chinese opera, such as stances, programs, and accompanying orchestra compositions, were all perfected and matured in the development of Kunqu. The growth of Kunqu represents the growth of Chinese opera, which has had a direct influence on the formation and development of Peking Opera, Sichuan Opera, Xiang Opera, Yue Opera, Huangmei Opera and many other styles, which is why people often call Kunqu the "Ancestor of the Hundred Operas".
