Today is the fourth anniversary of "12 29", and young people are everywhere, full of vigor and vitality. What a lively party this is! The conference commemorating "December 29th" was held more than once in Yan 'an, but I failed to attend the last few times. I am very excited to attend today.

I think things are easier in China now. What happened to China? It is an anti-imperialist and anti-dark force. Imperialism and dark forces began with the Opium War, and the people of China resisted for a hundred years. It's been a long time. Although I haven't finished writing it, it's much easier now. Because the Kuomintang die-hards have greatly stepped up their anti-* * activities and dealt a blow to the progressive cultural circles, some people now say that things in China are not easy. They strive for the progress and interests of the country and the nation. They are enthusiastic and kind-hearted and want to run the country and the nation well. However, at the critical moment in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, they saw the shadow of surrender, division and retrogression cast by the diehard forces around them, and their efforts were restricted and oppressed in various ways, which made them feel that things were difficult. This is just one aspect of looking at things. Of course, we are firmly opposed to the perversion of the die-hards, but on the whole, we think that things in China are not only not difficult, but also relatively easy to handle.

Why? This has to start with the1February 29th movement that we commemorate today.

First, all comrades know what the December 29th Movement was all about. However, we need to further understand: what kind of political environment did it come into being? What is the political significance? What kind of influence does it have on China politics? Understand these problems, you will know that the situation in China is very different from the past. Things are not more difficult than in the past, but much easier.

After the Long March, the Red Army arrived in Wuqi, northern Shaanxi on 1935 10. At that time, the enemy was still attacking us. At the end of that year 1 1, we won three battles in Fuxian. In the midst of congratulations,1February 10, when we heard the news of the December 29th Movement in Beiping, we were extremely happy! The Red Army comrades completed such a great Long March, and the student comrades launched such a great national salvation movement in Peiping. Both of them are fighting for the liberation of the nation and people, and their direct significance is to promote War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Therefore, the December 29th Movement is a very important aspect of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's preparation in history.

Some people say that the December 29th Movement is not as great as the May 4th Movement, that is, the former is not as great as the latter in political sense. Is this right? Wrong. We think the significance of both is equally great.

The May 4th Movement made preparations for the Northern Expedition. Without the May 4th Movement, the Northern Expedition would be unthinkable. Some people think that the student movement has no power, but what is the truth? The May 4th Movement of the broad masses of students promoted the anti-imperialist and anti-traitor struggle against the June 3rd national strike, the market strike and the class strike, and developed into a national movement. After the May 4th Movement, China's * * * production party came into being, which contributed to the first cooperation between countries, and the May 30th Movement and the Northern Expedition resulted in the first Great Revolution. Then, obviously, without the May 4th Movement, the first Great Revolution would have been impossible. The May 4th Movement did prepare public opinion, people's hearts, thoughts and cadres for the first great revolution.

As for the December 29th Movement, it was the preparation for the great War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, just as the May 4th Movement was the preparation for the first great revolution. "December 29th" promoted the "July 7th" Anti-Japanese War and made preparations for it.

Let's see under what circumstances the December 29th Movement took place. On the one hand, it happened during the Kuomintang reactionaries' * * * war, and under the circumstances of military and cultural encirclement and suppression, the * * * production party was considered to be absolutely incompetent and absolutely illegal in the Kuomintang-ruled area. In the so-called "suppression" war in the past, it goes without saying that the * * * production party and the Red Army were in a difficult situation. Later, on the Long March of the Red Army, people "sent" 25,000 Li in the back, with a "welcome" in front and a "gift" in the sky. This gift is called a bomb. Although the "farewell" people sent each other off and the "welcome" people greeted each other one after another, the Red Army still arrived in northern Shaanxi. But the enemy still used bullets as gifts and fought back and forth. In other words, when the Red Army arrived in northern Shaanxi, it was still in an "encirclement and suppression" environment. This is the situation of military "encirclement and suppression". What about the cultural "encirclement and suppression"? The enemy's "blockhouses" are built in schools, books, newspapers and magazines, social cultural and educational institutions, and tend to be "slow and steady, step by step." This, we just need to look at Mr. Lu Xun's "Miscellaneous Feelings" to know. His essays attacking the disadvantages of the times are against cultural "encirclement and suppression" and oppression of young people's thoughts. On the other hand, Japanese imperialism occupied the northeast of China, brewing "specialization of North China" and actively preparing to destroy all China. So these 450 million people, everyone will do it to fight Japanese imperialism. However, some people just disagree. However, they also want to fight. Who are they fighting? Is a * * * production party, is a young student, is a progressive in the field of culture. The people of the whole country said to them: You are going in the wrong direction, and we firmly oppose it. This is another aspect of the environment in which the December 29th Movement took place. 1After the exercise on February 29th, things became easier. The peaceful settlement of the Xi Incident made it impossible for the Kuomintang government to fight only the * * * production party without fighting Japanese imperialism, so it had to abandon the policy of "suppressing * * *" and take the road of preparing for the war of resistance, and opened the Third Plenary Session of the Kuomintang, which in fact declared the establishment of the anti-Japanese national United front. For these, the contribution of the December 29th Movement is enormous.
