Where is Sanxingdui?

There are three kinds of archaeological cultures with different appearance but continuous development in Sanxingdui site, i.e., the first phase culture represented by the Longshan era to Xia dynasty site group in Chengdu Plain, also known as "Baodun culture"; the second phase culture represented by the magnificent ancient city and highly developed bronze civilization of Sanxingdui in Shang dynasty; and the third phase culture represented by the period from the end of Shang dynasty to the early Western Zhou dynasty, i.e., "Twelve Bridges Culture" in Chengdu. In the Shang Dynasty, Sanxingdui has developed into a highly developed bronze civilization center, which is the heyday of Sanxingdui civilization, that is, the early state of Shu.

The Sanxingdui site is an ancient Shu culture site dating from about 4800 to 3100 years ago (2800 to 1100 BC). The discovery of the Sanxingdui site and its cultural relics strongly proves the existence of the ancient State of Shu 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, as well as the diversification of the origin of Chinese civilization. The Sanxingdui site is an important representative of the world's bronze civilization from the 16th century B.C. to the 14th century B.C. It is of great value to the study of the process of the early state and the development of religious consciousness, and occupies an important position in the history of the development of human civilization. It is one of the largest capital city sites with a regional center in southwest China. Its discovery has provided unique physical evidence for the faded ancient state of Shu, advancing the history of civilization in the Sichuan region by more than 2,000 years.

Background of Sanxingdui Culture Excavation

The name of Sanxingdui Culture is based on the information obtained from several archaeological surveys and excavations from 1933 to 1980 and 1981. Since the first excavation by Ge Weihan and Lin Mingjun of the West China University Museum in 1933, scientific archaeological surveys and excavations have been carried out in the area of Sanxingdui only after 1949. Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee, Sichuan University, Department of History, equal to 1956, 1958, 1963, 1964 and May 1980 in this area of archaeological work, then called this area of the ancient site for the ancient site of Zhongxing (because the site is located in Guanghan County, the range of Zhongxing Commune).

From November 1980 to May 1981, the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Management Committee, the Provincial Museum and the Guanghan County Museum of Culture carried out excavations at Sanxingdui, obtaining rich information and discovering 18 house bases, 3 ash pits, 4 tombs, more than 110 pieces of jade and stoneware, more than 70 pieces of pottery, and more than 100,000 pieces of ceramic fragments. The upper age limit is 4,500±150 years before present, and it roughly extends to about 3,000 years before present, i.e. from the late Neolithic period to the comparable middle-plains Xia and Shang periods.

Architectural Features

The Sanxingdui site, located on the south bank of the Yuzi River northwest of the city of Guanghan, Sichuan Province, China, 40 kilometers south of the capital of Sichuan Province, Chengdu, and 7 kilometers east of the city of Guanghan, is a huge site complex consisting of a large number of distribution points of ancient cultural relics.
