Auburn University, or AU or Auburn for short, founded in 1856, is the largest university in the state of Alabama and the first traditionally white university in the state to admit black students. As one of the oldest and most prestigious centuries-old universities in the southern United States, Auburn University has an alumni network of more than 300,000, with an enrollment of nearly 25,000 students, and many distinguished alumni are active today in all walks of life, including Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and Don Logan, media mogul and former CEO of Time Warner, among others.

Auburn University is located in the college town of Auburn, Alabama, about an hour and a half from Atlanta, the largest city in the southeastern U.S. Auburn is a nationally renowned college town, and in 2015, U.S. News & World Report named Auburn one of the "Top 10 Best Places to Live in the U.S.," and The Princeton Review named Auburn University one of the "Top 10 Places to Live in America. The Princeton Review recognized Auburn as a "Top 10 University for Quality of Life". The university has a 240,000-square-foot recreation and wellness center, one-third of which is home to an indoor track and gym, a virtual golf simulator, a 40-person sauna and a splash pad.

In 2013, Auburn University was ranked 82nd in the US News National Composite University Rankings and is one of the traditional top 100 universities in the United States. The university has 12 colleges covering more than 140 majors and offers the state's only publicly ****supported programs in many areas, including agriculture, forestry, architecture, construction, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine, with particularly strong research programs in the colleges of literature, mathematics, business, education, and engineering. Auburn has its own civilian airport and is one of the few universities in the nation that has been granted both land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant for research. In addition, Auburn's athletic performance is excellent, and its Tigers athletic teams have dominated the NCAA competition many times.
