Jianchuan wood carving has a long history. The woodcarving screen preserved in Shaxi South Temple in Jianchuan is similar to the adjacent Shi Zhongshan Grottoes in Tang Dynasty in terms of knife work and style. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the woodcarving skills of Jianchuan have been significantly developed and improved, and Jianchuan carpenters have spread all over Yunnan. According to legend, some famous woodcarvings and buildings in Yunnan Province, such as Kunming Jinma Bijifang, Baoshan Feilai Temple, Erhai Bajiao Pavilion and Jizushan Temple, all came from Jianchuan carpenters.

Jianchuan woodcarving marries the world

There are two main kinds of woodcarving products in Jianchuan. One is construction, which mainly includes all kinds of buildings, platforms, pavilions and pavilions. Commonly used in Bai folk houses. The lattice doors are mostly in relief, with patterns such as flowers and birds, insects and fish, dragons, phoenixes, lions, elephants, fishermen, cultivators, firewood, scholars, etc., such as "Magpie going into the sea", "Yuanyang playing in water" and "Lion rolling hydrangea". The second is furniture, mainly tables, chairs, coffee tables, screens, wardrobes, writing desks and so on. And the marble furniture made in Lvmu is the best in furniture. This kind of furniture is specially designed for export and viewing, including more than 20 varieties such as chairs, coffee tables, flowers and horizontal tables.

Jianchuan furniture mostly adopts the cloud wood (i.e. green wood) with fine size, strong toughness and beautiful wood grain, and the carvings are mostly transparent, with fine workmanship and beautiful appearance. The pattern not only embodies the tradition, but also combines contemporary techniques to show new ideas in the tradition. At present, this durable and practical traditional handicraft has entered the international market and sold to the United States, Canada, Germany, Mali, Zaire, Singapore, Malaya, Japan, Hong Kong and Macao, and is deeply loved by friends at home and abroad.

Jianchuan carpenter is ingenious. They carved the story of the origin of the White State on the nave Gate of Shengyuan Temple in Xizhou, Dali, the panorama of Dali on the gate of Daci Temple in Dali, and their own craftsmanship on the doors and windows of Jizu Mountain complex. They are all layers of carved figures, flowers and birds, with strange styles. The famous Jianchuan carpenters also participated in the construction of the Forbidden City and Yuanmingyuan in Beijing, and their skills spread all over Sichuan and Guizhou provinces.
