Globally Important Agricultural Heritage

Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), conceptually equivalent to World Heritage Sites, is defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as:

"The unique land use systems and agricultural landscapes formed through the long-term synergistic evolution and dynamic adaptation of rural areas and their environment, which are rich in biodiversity and can meet the needs of local socio-economic and cultural development, and are conducive to the promotion of sustainable regional development".

On May 20, 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced the latest recognition of three globally important agricultural cultural heritages in China.

In May 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), for the first time completing a study tour by online means, officially recognized three traditional agricultural systems in China as Globally Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage, namely the Anxi Tieguanyin Tea Culture System in Fujian, the Aluqorqin Grassland Nomadic Pastoralism System in Inner Mongolia, and the Dry-crop Shiyan Terracing System in Shibixian County, Hebei, China The two systems are Fujian Anxi Tieguanyin Tea Culture System, Inner Mongolia Arukhorqin Grassland Nomadic System and Hebei Shixian Dryland Shiyan Terrace System. Up to now, China's globally important agricultural cultural heritage increased to 18, the number of the world's first.
