Tracing back to the source, the history of Hongqi brand cars began at 1958. On July 28th, 1958, a red flag truck and a red flag 35-seat bus were officially rolled off the assembly line in Jinan Auto Parts Factory. According to the newspaper report at that time: "This kind of car was trial-produced by imitating the Hungarian D420 car, with a maximum horsepower of 85 horses, a maximum speed of 74.5 kilometers per hour, a load of 3.5 tons and a maximum gradient of 32 degrees. The bus body is all metal, beautiful in shape and equipped with 35 spring seats, so passengers are very comfortable to sit on. " On July 30th, 1958, Jinan Municipal Committee and Jinan Municipal People's Committee held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Hongqi brand cars. Liu Naidian, Mayor of Jinan, attended the meeting to congratulate. In a jubilation, Liu Naidian announced: In order to speed up the development of automobile manufacturing industry in our city, the municipal party committee decided to rename Jinan Automobile Parts Factory as Jinan Automobile Factory (now China National Heavy Truck Group). It is particularly important to point out that the first domestic car born in FAW in that year was not called "Red Flag" but "Dongfeng", and its brand was ca7 1. Later, FAW named Dongfeng Red Flag.

1in August, 958, the central government was eager to use domestic luxury cars in the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and assigned the task of manufacturing domestic luxury cars to FAW. On the basis of a Chrysler limousine with model 1955 borrowed from Jilin University of Technology, the workers of FAW made a limousine by hand after making improvements according to the national characteristics of China. The power system and equipment of this car are similar to those of Chrysler. Chrysler's car is actually completely disassembled, and every part is hand-mapped and then manufactured by itself. Wu De, the first secretary of Jilin Provincial Party Committee, officially named the car "Red Flag" when ten thousand people gathered in the factory. 1958 September19, Li Fuchun, Yang, Cai Chang and other central leaders inspected FAW, and praised Hongqi sedan greatly, which was finalized from now on.

From1August 1958 to1May 1959, the designers of FAW conducted five system tests on the whole vehicle of Hongqi. After five tests, the prototype of Hongqi sedan was officially numbered ca72, which was the first real Hongqi brand limousine in China.
