What is the Toyo Dog Breed

The Toyo Dog is the Akita, the national dog of Japan.

It is a family pet dog in Japan. The Akita is the largest fox dog breed in Japan, and this large fox dog is quite a sight to behold even in countries like Europe and the United States, where there are many fox dog breeds. In Japan, the Akita is a national historical relic, a national dog, and is famous for its "loyal dog, Hachioji," the only large dog designated as a national natural monument in Japan.

Akita Appearance:

Medium-sized, with a tail that curls forward onto its back and erect ears. Males are 66.0 cm to 71.1 cm tall and females are 61.0 cm to 66.0 cm tall. The head is large and broad with a more expressive face.

The body mechanism is compact and powerful with strong bones. The broad head, bluntly triangular in shape, the deep-set muzzle, the small eyes and the upright, forward-facing ears that form a straight line with the back of the neck are distinctive features of this breed. The large, curly tail contrasting with the broad head is also characteristic of this breed.

Pelt Double coat. The inner layer is thicker, softer, denser and shorter than the outer layer. The outer coat is erect, rough and somewhat outwardly spreading. The hairs on the head, legs and ears are short. The hairs on the shoulders and rump can be up to 5 centimeters long, slightly longer than the rest of the body except the tail, which is the longest and most abundant.

Any color, including white, with spots and dots is acceptable. The color is striking and clear, with spots of harmonious color. Having star spots or a mask (large black face) is also acceptable. White Akitas do not have masks, and the patterned spots on a white base are evenly dotted on the head and more than 1/3 of the body. The color of the inner coat may be slightly different from the outer coat.
