Why do you fly kites on March 3rd every year?
The folk custom of flying kites in Shangsi or on March 3rd in Tomb-Sweeping Day originated from the folk belief of "breaking the harrier to eliminate disasters". At the beginning, people wrote all the disasters on kites, and then cut the kite string when the kite flew high. When the kite flies with the wind, it also symbolizes that all disasters will disappear with the kite.
When Tibetan old people fly kites, they will stick a stick of incense on the joint between the kite and the thread. When the kite flies to a certain height, incense burns the thread, and the kite floats away with the wind, indicating that the healthier you are, the longer you live. On the other hand, farmers hope that paper owls over the fields can drive away bad birds and pests on the beds in order to pray for a bumper harvest in a year.
