April 8 is the 74th anniversary of the victory in the Taierzhuang War in Zaozhuang, Shandong, which shocked China and the world. It is also the anniversary of the reconstruction of the ancient city of Taierzhuang.

On this day, more than a thousand people in Taierzhuang held a grand burial of the Unknown Heroes of the Great War and the grand unveiling of the Taierzhuang Unknown Heroes Memorial Sculpture to commemorate the unknown heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country more than 70 years ago.

In September 2011, two human remains and helmets, swords, guns and other relics were discovered during the reconstruction of the ancient city of Taierzhuang on the north side of the west gate. After double identification by anthropology and archaeology experts from Shandong University, it was confirmed that the deceased were Chinese soldiers who fought in the Taierzhuang War.

The soldiers are about 25 and 35 years old respectively, but their names have not been verified.

The Taierzhuang District Government decided to hold a grand ceremony to bury the remains of these two unknown heroes and build a commemorative sculpture to remember the immortal achievements of the heroes of the Anti-Japanese War.

On the morning of the same day, Mr. Wang Xiang, Director of the Taierzhuang War Memorial Hall, hosted Fan Weimin, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Arts and Crafts Society and President of Sculpture Magazine, Wang Guangjin, Secretary of the Taierzhuang District Party Committee and Director of the Taierzhuang Ancient City Management Committee, representatives of the hometown of troops participating in the Taierzhuang War, and representatives of Guangxi

Mr. Huang Weijun, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Film Group, and Mr. Li Xiaojin***, grandnephew of General Li Zongren, commander of the Fifth War Zone of the National Army, also unveiled the sculpture.

The 93-year-old Zhang Yuquan, a soldier who participated in the Taierzhuang War and a veteran of the 88th Regiment of the 30th Division of the 30th Army of the National Revolutionary Army, lit the everlasting lantern for the sculpture of the unknown hero. The representative of the relatives of the soldiers who participated in the war and the former 30th Army of the Second Group Army of the National Revolutionary Army

Ni Hui, the grandson of Adjutant Ni Zhiben, read the memorial text. Wei Yan, the representative of the children of the soldiers who participated in the Taierzhuang War and the granddaughter of Major General Gan Fu of the Fifth Theater of the National Revolutionary Army and the director of the Cultural Exchange Department of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, delivered a speech.

More than a thousand representatives observed three minutes of silence and then laid flowers to the unknown heroes.

The statue of the Unknown Hero is placed in the Peace Square in Taierzhuang, Shandong, facing the Beijing-Hangzhou Ancient Canal, with the Li Zongren Historical Archives to the north and the Taierzhuang War Memorial Hall to the northwest.

Designed by local sculpture artist Mr. Zhu Lin.

Zhu Lin consulted a large number of historical materials with reverence, and visited the ancient city of Taierzhuang many times, a place where "no soil is fertile for blood, no walls are bombarded" and "a place where the Chinese nation shows its unyielding power" to pay homage to the martyrs of the Anti-Japanese War.

The northwest corner of the ancient city was one of the most intense battles. At that time, the Japanese army captured the northwest corner of the ancient city and attempted to seize the west gate in an attempt to cut off the connection between the Chinese defenders and the city.

The national army formed a death squad, armed with machetes and grenades, and engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese army. 44 people were martyred. The remains of the unknown hero soldiers were unearthed here.

Staring at the remains of the martyrs, the broken and flattened steel helmets, and the rusty swords, the sculptor seemed to see that under the conditions of absolute disadvantage in weapons and equipment, the Chinese soldiers fought bloody battles and risked their lives to defend the dignity of the nation.

I can't help but be moved, and devote myself to creation with passion.

With the cooperation of the working team, the creation and production of the sculpture was completed in a very short time.

The sculpture adopts a combination of realism and abstraction to highlight the theme of unknown heroes and show that the artillery fire of the invaders 70 years ago could destroy the solid city wall, but could not destroy the loyalty, passion and iron-blooded pride of the Chinese soldiers.

The artist repeatedly considered the details and was meticulous, choosing the form of a close-up of a young soldier's head protruding from the ruins of the wall, giving people a strong visual effect and a spiritual shock.

The soldiers' helmets on the unearthed remains were crushed and broken. They were created after repeated comparisons with historical objects and image data, making the work historically authentic and closer to the style of Chinese soldiers in the 1930s.

The statue of the young warrior is soothing, quiet, and plain in form; its melancholy expression reveals courage; its gaze slightly gazing upward contains both the desire for life and the perseverance to die generously.

Looking at the statue of the unknown hero, a veteran of the war, the 93-year-old Mr. Zhang Yuquan felt as if he could not help but burst into tears when he saw his comrades who fought side by side in life and death, and every compatriot present was moved by it.

The ancient city has the honor to bury the bones of loyal people, and the sculptures will last forever to sing the praises of heroes.

The creation of the Taierzhuang Battle Unknown Hero Sculpture, a major theme of the Anti-Japanese War, is a masterpiece of sculpture in terms of expression and technique.

It sets up a historical monument for the Chinese nation to show its unyielding power.
