What's the difference between solid wood furniture, particleboard and MDF furniture?
At present, the main tree species suitable for furniture and decoration are: Fraxinus mandshurica, Ulmus northeast, eucalyptus willow, camphor wood, basswood, birch, colored wood, teak, beech, cherry wood, rosewood, cypress, yew, Korean pine, oak, pineapple, walnut, Schima superba and rosewood. In order to accurately identify tree species and rationally use wood, it is necessary to fully understand the performance characteristics of some commonly used wood.
Fraxinus mandshurica: Its tree is slightly hard, its texture is straight, its structure is rough, its pattern is beautiful, its corrosion resistance is good, its water resistance is good, it is easy to process but not easy to dry, its toughness is high, its bonding, painting and coloring properties are good, and it has good decoration. It is widely used in furniture and interior decoration at present.
Willow Eucalyptus: Its material has moderate weight, straight or oblique texture, slightly coarse structure, easy processing and good bonding performance. There is slight warping and cracking during drying.
Poplar: Wood commonly used in northern China is soft, stable and cheap. In ancient furniture, it is often used as the accessory of elm furniture and the fetal bone of lacquer furniture. This is the so-called poplar, also known as "Populus simonii", which often has a piece of luster, so it is also called "satin poplar", not the kind of Su Yang, Populus euphratica and Populus euphratica introduced in the middle of this century. Poplar often has a "coquettish taste", which is lighter and softer than birch. On the other hand, birch has a slight fragrance and often has very fine brown-black water stains. This is the difference between the two.
Juglans mandshurica: Its wood has luster, straight or oblique texture, slightly rough structure, slow drying speed, but not easy to warp, good toughness, easy processing and smooth section. Good bending, painting and bonding performance, strong nail force.
Yellow pineapple: its wood is shiny, its texture is straight, its structure is rough, its annual rings are obviously uniform, its material is soft, easy to dry, its processability is good, its color and pattern are beautiful, its paint and adhesion are good, its nailing force is moderate and it is not easy to split; Good corrosion resistance, used for high-grade furniture and plywood.
Oak wood: it has large wood ratio, hard texture, large shrinkage and high strength. Compact structure, not easy to cut off, smooth cutting surface, not easy to crack, warp, deformation, not easy to dry. Moisture-proof, wear-resistant, not easy to bond, good coloring performance. At present, decorative wood floors are widely used.
Cinnamomum camphora: Its wood has fragrance, which can prevent corrosion and insects. The material is slightly light, not easy to deform, easy to process, smooth, shiny, durable and sticky. The color is beautiful after painting.
Birch: Its material is slightly heavy and hard, with meticulous structure, great mechanical strength and elasticity. Warping and cracking are easy to occur when drying, and the adhesive property is good and the cutting surface is smooth. Poor corrosion resistance and good paint performance.
Birch: produced in Northeast China and North China, with delicate wood, pale white and yellowish color, poor fiber shear resistance and easy stubble breaking. Its roots and knots have many patterns. The ancients often used it for decoration such as door cores. Its bark is flexible and beautiful. Pu people are very touched by this, and often inlay scabbard and bow back. Only its wood is juicy and deformed when it becomes wood, so tables and chairs made of birch are rare.
Chinese fir: Its material is light and soft, easy to dry, with small shrinkage, no warping, good durability, easy processing, thick section, medium strength, easy splitting and good bonding performance. It is the most widely used medium-grade wood for furniture and decoration in southern provinces.
Elm: beautiful pattern, rough structure, good processability, poor drying, easy to crack and warp.
Beech wood: hard material, flat texture, fine structure, wear resistance and luster, not easy to deform when drying, and good processing, finishing and gluing properties.
Cinnamomum camphora: It is found in all southern provinces of China, but there are more in Taiwan Province and Fujian. The tree diameter is larger, the wood width is wider, the pattern is beautiful, especially it has a strong fragrance, which can drive away insects. China's camphor wood boxes are well-known at home and abroad, including suitcases, sleeping boxes (suitcases), top boxes and cabinets. Only tables and chairs are mostly in Beijing. In the old wood industry, camphor wood is divided into several types according to its shape, such as camphor, camphor tree, camphor tree, camphor tree, camphor tree, camphor tree and so on.
Walnut wood: Lvliang and Taihang Mountain are rich in walnuts. Walnut is the first-class material for making furniture in Jin Dynasty, which has been polished by water mill and waxed. It will have a hardwood-like luster, delicate and asexual texture, easy to carve, and elegant and soft color. Its products are available in Ming and Qing dynasties, and most of them are excellent. Available and hidden. Its wooden features are only fine needle-like brown eyes and yellowish filiform annual rings. Weight and elm, etc.
Catalpa bungeana: A walnut that does not bear fruit is called Catalpa bungeana. Catalpa bungeana's brown eyes are flat and dull, and its dark color is soft and dull, but its shrinkage rate is small, so it can be used as the core material of the door core desktop. Commonly used in Han wood and walnut. Compared with walnut, Catalpa bungeana is lighter in weight, darker in color, looser in texture, and large and scattered in brown eyes.
Nanmu: It is a kind of high-grade wood. Its color is light orange yellow and slightly gray, its texture is elegant and quiet, its texture is moist and soft, it does not shrink, and it has a faint fragrance when it rains. All the southern provinces have production, but Sichuan is the best. In the Ming Dynasty, it was widely used by the imperial court. Now the Forbidden City in Beijing, the first-class ancient buildings in Beijing, are mostly built of nanmu. Nanmu is not rotten and fragrant. The Royal Library, with its golden painted throne, is decorated mostly with nanmu. Such as Wenyuan Pavilion, Leshou Hall, Hall of Supreme Harmony, Changling and other important buildings have nanmu decoration and furniture, which are often used with rosewood. It's a pity that many people don't understand it now, and often regard it as a sacred object. They think that the quality is not strong or heavy, and the color is not dark or bright, so they abandon it. The insiders' comments on its texture are as follows: Jin Sinan, Minnan, Minnan and Gentiana. In addition, in Shanxi and other places, hardwoods such as redwood and yellow pear are often called "Nanmu", the original meaning should be wood from the south. At first glance, it is easy to be confused with this "Nanmu".
Maple: moderate weight, fine structure, easy processing, smooth section, well coated and glued, warping when drying.
Cinnamomum camphora: moderate weight, delicate structure, fragrance, not easy to deform when drying, good processability, coating and gluing.
Willow: moderate material, slightly coarse structure, easy processing, good adhesion and finishing performance. When it is dry, there will be slight cracks and warpage. Plywood made of wicker is called Philippine board.
Rosewood: hard material, excessive texture, medium structure, corrosion resistance, not easy to dry, smooth section, good coating and good bonding.
Red sandalwood (mahogany): hard material, redundant texture, rough structure, strong durability, luster and smooth section.
Wood-based panels, commonly used plywood, plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, hollow board and so on. Because of the different combination structures of various wood-based panels, they can overcome the shortcomings of wood expansion, contraction, warping and cracking, so they have many advantages when used in furniture.
Korean pine: light and soft material, moderate strength, good dryness, water resistance, corrosion resistance, processing, painting, coloring and cementing.
White pine: the material is light and soft, elastic, fine and uniform in structure, good in drying, water resistance and corrosion resistance, and good in processability, painting and coloring cementation. White pine is stronger than Korean pine.
Cypress: Cypress has fragrance and can be used as medicine. Cypress can soothe the nerves and replenish the heart. Cedar is yellow, thin, fragrant, water-resistant and knotty, so people often regard it as "cypress". A good coffin is also made of cypress, which is rot-resistant.
Paulownia: the material is very light and soft, the structure is thick, the cut water surface is not smooth, the dryness is good, and it does not crack. .
Basswood: slightly lighter and softer in material, slightly thinner in structure, silky in luster, not easy to crack, and good in processability, paintability, coloring and cementation. No corrosion resistance, slightly warping when drying.
Juglans mandshurica wood has luster, straight or oblique texture, slightly rough structure, slow drying speed, but not easy to warp, good toughness, easy processing and smooth section. Good bending, painting and bonding performance, strong nail force.
Black walnut (scientific name: walnut, l? )
The appearance of black walnut heartwood is dark brown, sometimes with black or purple stripes. The color of black walnut varies with different growing areas. Therefore, the reason why it is called black walnut is not that its wood is black, but that its shell is black. In fact, its wood is light taupe to dark purplish brown. Therefore, black walnut is usually called walnut. Great changes have taken place in the nature of black walnut, and various patterns have been formed, which are deeply loved by people. Its wood is heavy and hard, resistant to collision and friction; Corrosion-resistant, easy to dry, not easy to deform; Easy construction and bonding. Wood is hard, suitable for making carved parts of modern furniture, and the shrinkage rate is very small, which can withstand the changing climate without cracking. Any painting method can be used. Other wood can't absorb oil coating like black walnut, which is another reason why it is often used to make modern furniture. Use. It is most suitable for making furniture and interior decoration. The traditional coated black walnut can keep its original appearance only by washing it with neutral soap and water and polishing it with wax. Oily coating can be coated with boiled linseed oil twice a year.
Teak (scientific name: iris? )
The color of teak changed from honey to brown, and became thicker with time. The material is durable, the heartwood is similar to beech, but the color is slightly thicker. Expansion and contraction are the least of all wood. It can resist the erosion of land and marine animals and will not corrode iron. Because of the small shrinkage, it is not easy to leak water. Teak has many advantages, such as high corrosion resistance, difficult deformation in various climates, easy construction and so on. Therefore, it is suitable for making ship signs and making ship decks. Now it has become a world-famous high-grade wood. Most furniture in Scandinavia and the East is made of teak.
Manglietia heixinensis
The tree is 25m high,15m under the branches, and DBH is 80cm, with the highest140cm, so it is an evergreen tree. It is mainly produced in the evergreen broad-leaved forest in the northwest of Myanmar at an altitude of 800- 1800 meters, and its age is over 120 years. Among the common commodity names in Yunnan timber market, there are black-hearted lotus, black-hearted Manglietia and black-hearted nanmu. Because its finished product is similar to teak, it is known as "Golden Pomelo" in the wood markets of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing.
Wood material:
Wood is porous, and the heartwood is golden yellow to grayish yellow brown, which is obviously different from sapwood. The sapwood is light yellow and white, the production wheel is slightly obvious, and the wheel is light and thin. There are a little more holes, very small and slightly small, which are obvious under the magnifying glass; The size is the same, the distribution is quite uniform, and it is scattered, and it is not found in the body. The amount of thin-walled tissue on the axial surface is small, and the rim is slightly visible to the naked eye. The number of wood rays is moderate, extremely fine to slightly fine, which can be seen clearly under a magnifying glass. This tube hole is very small, and there are extremely fine ray marks on the radial section.
Wood properties:
Wood has strong luster, no special smell and taste, and is rot-proof and moth-proof. The texture is flat and the structure is fine and even. Moderate hardness and strength (air-dried density 0.5kg/cm3), moderate drying speed, no deformation due to shrinkage, easy cutting, smooth section, good gloss after coating, and the effect is close to teak.
Wood was the first choice for court buildings in Ming and Qing dynasties, and now it is a high-quality furniture material, which is suitable for interior decoration such as plywood, doors, windows, floors, arts and crafts supplies, sculptures and so on.
Wood properties of Eucalyptus australis: oiliness, luster and interlaced texture; Heavy weight and high strength; Dry shrinkage (1mm), stabilizing materials. Easy processing and smooth planing; Good adhesion, nail coating performance, corrosion resistance and dryness. The air-dried density is 1. 13g/cm3, which is far superior to Eucalyptus rubra in Southeast Asia. Its surface color is red, and it is known as Australian mahogany.
Wood uses: mahogany furniture, floors, veneers, wooden lines, stairs, interior decoration, handicrafts, acoustics, piano manufacturing, etc.
Australian eucalyptus globulus and Tasmanian elephant wood belong to hard miscellaneous wood and are also a kind of elephant wood.
The heartwood is grayish yellow and light brown, gradually changing from sapwood to heartwood, and the catheter can be seen with naked eyes. The air-drying density is 0.65-0.8g/cm3, with clear texture and good stability.
American hardwood
American oak
Widely distributed in the eastern region. Oak is the largest broad-leaved forest tree species in the east. There are more red oak trees than white oak trees. There are many varieties of red oak, about eight of which are commercial trees.
The white wood of red oak is white to light brown, and the heartwood is pink brown. The appearance of red oak is usually similar to that of white oak, but there are few visible figures because of the thin pith ray. Most red oak trees are linear and have rough texture. The red oak tree is named after its leaves turn red in autumn.
Red oak has good machinability and good fixing performance of nails and screws; Good surface can be obtained after dyeing and polishing; Slow drying, easy to crack and warp; High shrinkage and variable performance.
Red oak is hard and heavy, with moderate bending strength and stiffness, high breaking strength and excellent steam bending resistance. Red oak in the south grows faster than that in the north, and the wood is harder and heavier.
It is the most widely used wood species.
Export: The supply of board and wood chips is abundant, but the quantity is not as good as that of white oak. Red oak is usually classified by origin, and there are northern red oak and southern red oak for sale respectively.
American poplar
Wood is white, mixed with light brown heartwood, and there is little difference in color between white wood and heartwood. This kind of wood grain is fine and even, and the wood grain is straight.
It is not easy to crack when drilling nails, easy to process, and the cutting surface is slightly fluffy and unclear, which has good turning, boring and sanding properties. It can absorb paints and dyes and produce a good finish, but the blurred part of the surface needs care. Low to moderate shrinkage and good dimensional stability. Poplar is a real poplar, and its characteristics and properties are similar to those of poplar and European poplar. Poplar wood is light, soft, with low bending strength, high rigidity and moderate earthquake resistance.
The supply is limited and thick wood is scarce.
Due to the small market demand, the export volume is limited.
Furniture parts (drawer sides), doors, molded parts, photo frames, indoor joinery products, toys, kitchen utensils, matches (USA), and important professional uses include sauna boards (due to poor heat transfer performance) and chopsticks.
American basswood
Other names: the white wood parts of Bodhi wood, American white wood and American basswood are usually quite large and milky white, and gradually merge into light to reddish brown heartwood, sometimes with deep stripes. This wood grain is fine and even, and its texture is fuzzy and straight.
Basswood has good machinability and is easy to be processed by hand tools, so it is an excellent carving material. Nails, screws and glue have good fixing performance. After grinding, dyeing and polishing, good smooth surface can be obtained. Faster drying, less deformation and low aging degree. When drying, the shrinkage rate is quite large, but the dimensional stability is good.
Basswood is light in weight, soft in texture and low in strength, and belongs to a kind of wood with poor steam bending resistance.
Suitable for sculpture, automobile products, furniture, pattern making, molded products, indoor joinery products and musical instruments. The important professional use is soft venetian blinds.
Castanopsis americana
The white wood of American beech is red to white, while the heartwood is light brown red to dark brown red. Compared with European beech, American beech is slightly darker in color and less consistent. This kind of wood is generally straight and has a compact and uniform texture.
American beech is easy to be processed by most manual and mechanical tools, has good nail and glue fixing performance, and can be dyed and polished to obtain a good surface. Drying is still fast, but it is prone to warping, cracking and surface cracks. Large shrinkage and moderate performance change.
American beech is a kind of heavy, hard, strong and earthquake-resistant wood, which is very suitable for steam bending.
USA: Almost limited to low-end products.
Export: Very limited. Due to the small demand, there is sufficient supply of European beech.
Suitable for furniture, doors, floors, indoor joinery products, panels, brush handles and automobile products. Because it is tasteless and odorless, it is very suitable for making food containers.
American cherry wood
Other names: American black cherry
In various parts of the eastern United States, the main commercial forests are distributed in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and new york.
The heartwood color of cherry wood varies from bright red to brownish red, and becomes darker after sun exposure. On the contrary, its white wood is milky white. Cherry wood has fine and even lines and smooth texture, and naturally contains palm heart spots and tiny rubber pits.
Cherry wood is easy to process, nails and glue have good fixing performance, and an excellent smooth surface is produced after sanding, dyeing and polishing. Cherry wood dries quite quickly, and there will be considerable shrinkage during drying, but its size is stable after drying.
Cherry wood has medium density, good bending property, low rigidity, medium strength and vibration resistance.
Cherry wood is a kind of rot-resistant heartwood. Its white wood will be eaten by common furniture beetles, and its heartwood has moderate permeability resistance to anti-corrosion treatment agents.
