During the years of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the area where the New Year paintings were used covered all parts of the country, including Taiwan, except Tibet.
On May 20, 2006, woodblock prints of Zhuxianzhen were approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.On June 7, 2008, woodblock prints were approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
In November 2019, woodblock prints were included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage representative project protection units.
