Reconstruction of Baima

-

Suzhou Baima Temple is one of the 72 Baima temples in the south of the Southern Song Dynasty. The history of nearly a thousand years has not only failed to crush this temple, but has made it more prosperous.

In 2003, Master Hong Guang, then abbot of Suzhou Temple, decided to expand and repair the White Horse Temple in Suzhou, and the most difficult thing was the carving of Buddha statues in the temple.

According to Master Hong Guang, the recasting of Buddha statues should not only inherit the historical background, but also be innovative. The difficulty is so high that many Buddha sculptors are stumped.

In the end, Xu Wenbing accepted this important task, and the post-80s non-genetic inheritor of sculpture technology completed the sculpture of the Buddha statue in Baima Temple.

It is not only the birthplace of Buddha carving in China, but also the famous hometown of Buddha carving in China.

Nearly 100 families in the village carved Buddha statues from generation to generation. They carved statues for Buddha shrines such as Mount Putuo, Mount Emei, Mount Wutai and Mount Jiuhua, and Guanyin in Longhua Temple in Shanghai (Guanyin in Longhua Temple in Shanghai, Guanyin in Dongyue Emperor in Shanghai, Guanyin in Thailand, Mazu in Taiwan Province and Guanyin in Nanhai) are all their masterpieces.

From the age of 16 to the age of 38, Xu Wenbing has been dealing with Buddha statues, and his 22 years of sculpture experience has enabled him to integrate clay sculpture, wood carving and bodiless skills.

The difficulty in the creation of Suzhou White Horse Stone Buddha Statue is that most traditional Buddha statues require full and round shapes, while modern people prefer artistic shapes close to the human body, which is also a big challenge for Xu Wenbing.

He combined the two and constantly innovated on the basis of traditional sculpture art, and each work was carefully crafted from many processes such as material selection, processing, local treatment and painting. Strive to create unique shapes of Buddha statues and statues, so that each Buddha statue can show its unique personality characteristics, including Xu Wenbing's cognition and understanding of Buddha.

Bodhisattva Wei Tuo

-

Wei Tuo Bodhisattva, with her back to Maitreya and her face to Mahayana, is a Buddha whose responsibility is to protect Buddhism. Carving Wei Tuo Bodhisattva must show his majesty.

The Buddha statue of Baima Temple not only conforms to modern aesthetics, but also has traditional lacquer line carving and traditional gilding techniques. Xu Wenbing created a statue of Wei Tuo Bodhisattva in golden armor. This is also the Wei Tuo Bodhisattva in his mind.

Thousand-hand?Bodhisattva?

-

For the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva created for Baima Temple, Xu Wenbing adopted the face of the Buddha statue in the Tang and Song Dynasties, because he wanted to make the Buddha statue more human and intimate, and also wanted to be more kind and care for the world. He is no longer a detached and unattainable speculative god, but an authoritative master who rules the world.

Whether all beings want to be greedy for money or avoid disasters and diseases, avalokitesvara can be merciful, relieve all kinds of sufferings and give all kinds of benefits.

Jizo

Diwang Bodhisattva, who vowed to save all suffering beings, especially those in hell, was widely spread by Buddhism because of its virtue of "great filial piety" and "great wish", and was also a bodhisattva with many followers.

It's more difficult to build a bodhisattva familiar to the public, because believers are so familiar with it that it's easy to tell whether your Buddha statue is good or not.

Therefore, he will do everything meticulously and perfectly, no matter in manner or in details in his hands, so that the Buddha statue of the earth treasure can feel the compassion of the Buddha with his eyes closed.

The carving of Buddha statues is a bitter industry. Without love, it can't be sustained.

16 years old, when he first entered the business, Xu Wenbing cut firewood for a month and sharpened his knife for half a month before he managed to get in. And more people have given up when cutting wood.

Even with fame, carving Buddha was a chore, but he didn't give up. Instead, it is to collect disciples, build factories and open halls for people to visit the Buddha statues for free, just to make the Buddha sculptures develop continuously.

Casting a walking body for Buddha is not only a craft, but also a belief.
