Legend has it that Yuchi Jingde had a face like black charcoal, was good at using an iron whip and rode a piebald horse. According to the book Journey to the West, Yuchi Jingde and Qin Qiong became two traditional Taoist door deities because they protected Emperor Tang Taizong Li Shimin from being offended by the ghosts of the Dragon King, and Yuchi Jingde used to be a blacksmith as a young boy, and was often worshipped by blacksmiths in later times as a guardian of the profession. In the Tang Dynasty series of novels and commentaries, Yuchi Jingde is the reincarnation of the Black Fury, the thirteenth of the eighteen masters of the Sui and Tang dynasties (some versions are the seventeenth master), alongside Qin Qiong, with whom he exchanged three whips for two mace, and married two black and white ladies.

In "Xue Dingshan's Journey to the West", Yuchi Jingde, in order to save Xue Rengui, whipped the forbidden door, breaking the steel whip, remembering his master's words, "Whip is here, whip is gone," he hit the pillar and killed himself.
