Theory Levels for Guzheng Examination

The music theory exam levels corresponding to the Guzheng exam level are elementary, intermediate and advanced.

1. Guzheng Elementary:

(1) Elementary Music Theory Exam (Level 1): Includes tone bases, note names, notes, rhythms, modes, chords, and simple music score analysis.

(2) Elementary Sight-Singing and Ear-Training Exam (Level 1): Includes simple rhythmic and melodic sight-singing exercises, as well as listening and recognizing simple musical elements.

2. Intermediate Guzheng:

(1) Intermediate Music Theory Exam (Level 3): including the basics of music theory, tuning, harmony, musical structure, and score analysis.

(2) Intermediate Sight-Singing and Ear-Training Exam (Level 2): Includes sight-singing exercises in rhythm and melody of moderate difficulty, as well as listening to and recognizing musical elements of moderate difficulty.

3. Advanced Guzheng:

(1) Advanced Music Theory Exam (Grade 5): including basic elements of music, harmony, tonality, modality, composition, analyzing and interpreting music pieces.

(2) Advanced Sight-Singing and Ear-Training Exam (Level 3): Includes sight-singing exercises for difficult rhythms and melodies, and listening to and recognizing difficult musical elements.

The Guzheng exam requires students to have a certain foundation in music theory, especially for the intermediate and advanced exams, students need to master more in-depth and complex knowledge of music theory. Therefore, candidates need to prepare for the music theory exam seriously and gradually improve from the basics to ensure the successful passing of each exam level.
